Message: Here are some pics of my new MTX Thunderform box. I got the loaded and amped box. All in one just run the power and speaker wires and your set. It hits as hard as my friends with a seperate amp. also put a toggle switch on the power line for the box to beable to switch back to stock when the wife and baby are in the truck.

Message: I am looking for some kind of box that will not take up the presious little space I have in the back of my 2000 Dakota Club Cab. This MTX Thunderform Box looks like the perfect solution!!! Is this a pre-fabed box? and if so where can I find it and what is the cost?? Where is your amp mounted in the box? is there any trouble with the amp heating up and cutting out due to the tight air space? Thanks for any help!!

Message: It is a plastic molded box. You take your existing tool tray out and put the new pre-fab box in its place.
Mtx offers 3 solutins. Box no subs, box with 2 subs(6000 series), and box with subs and a amp(some other subs and amp. The amp runs at .5 ohm and the subs run at .7 ohm). The amp is located in the box. I opted for the amped version. The amp has not cut out or even gets hot.
I paid 399 for the amped version. But it retails for 540. Loaded is 349 (just 2 subs), and unloaded is around 200 (just box.)
I like my sound. I was not going for compitition. So it sounds crisp and clear. I replaced my fatory speakers with pioneer 6 1/2. They fit with no additial fitting. The outer ring is made to fit 6 3/4. I can't remember the model number on them but it is TS-something. They are crip and clear. I am going to try to ad an amp so the subs do not over power them. My deck is a Aiwa mp3 player. It pushes out 22 rms out the the speaker. They need more tho.

Message: i have that very same box. only the one that i ordered was the unamped loaded box. 2 10" mtx 6000's sound GREAT!!! i get MANY looks crusin down the street. bass is excellent for the size of the box and the ammount of speakers in it. i bought the mtx 4240 4ch amp running the subs mono and my polk audio components in the front coming off a pioneer DEH P-7200 head unit. one word LOUD!!. i mounted the amp under the drivers seat and haven't had 1 cut out due to overheating.
i paid $550 for my box(canadian funds). great thing is you don't have to worry about anyone seeing it or stealing it as you have to remove the front seats and half the interior to get it in.
i'll send in some pics if i can

Message: I am looking at both options Amped and Loaded. An amped box takes care of the power and amp space problem. Due to the fact that I haft to run an amp for the four 6 1/2's I like your idea of mounting it under the drivers seat!!! I am for sure going to go with the MTX Thunder form box!! But OUCH the cost is a little more than I wanted to pay!! I plan on installing four 6 1/2 Infinity 3-way Kappa’s " one of my friends has them in his truck and man the sound they put out is so clear and well rounded!! As far as amp to power it I am not sure?? The speakers recommend 100 RMS. The deck I plan on putting in is a Pioneer DEH-P7300.
If you guys have any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!!! I am a new Dakota owner and only this week found this web site. All I can say is Thank you guys for providing suck a great web site for resources and other info on the Dakota’s.

Message: From what i have heard, under the drivers seat is your best bet. The mtx subs that they put into these boxs are rated for 250w EACH!! but the amped box you get from MTX is only 100w!!! IF this is the case how much power sould I give these subs???? Keep in mind I haft to put the amp under the drivers seat so the smaller the size the better. HAs anyone else have a problem with there amps clipping when mounted under there front drivers seat??????

Message: I have the thunderform with 2 10" JL's(W0)subs. I Power it with the Punch 250.2(about 385 watts bridged). Also have 4 6 1/2" Sony two ways powered by a Punch 40(about 160 watts). The big amp is under the drivers seat and the 40 is under the passenger seat. I play it pretty hard and never had one cut off on me. Maybe because the amps gains are only 1/2 way up. WARNING: If you go with these subs, be prepared to do a little fiberglass work in your box. The subs are too deep and you'll have to do a little modifing. It was worth it to me.

Message: Does anyone know who sells MTX Thunderform boxes in Toronto?? I would like to know the cost for an unloaded box with no subs and amp. I'm in the process of designing a system that packs 2-10" subs for under the rear seats. If I can get the MTX box for a good price, then I wont have to bother building one.
Thanks in advance

Message: I have the thunderforms with two 10" Rockford Fosgate subs powered by a sony amp that puts out 780 watts bridged. On the amp I only have the bass turned up about half and it cuts out all the time if its turned up a little over half way. It seems like it should be able to hit a lot harder before cutting out because its not that loud. Can anyone help me out or tell me how to fix this?

Message: Albert...
Well... what Ohm rating are the Rockford Subs? I am assuming that your Sony amp is a 2 channel since you said it is bridged...
Are your subs 4 Ohms or 8 Ohms? If they are 4 Ohms and if you have them wired up in parallel (thereby showing your amp a 1 Ohm stereo bridged load) then maybe your amp is not stable to 1 Ohm stereo... which is the case with ALOT of 2 channel amps...
If that is the case, then I would suggest that you not bridge the amp and run each channel separately from the amp at 4 Ohms per channel. Your power rating will not be as high, however you still should have enough power to drive those subs and you won't risk damaging the amp... or the subs.

Message: DarkFury,
My subs are 4 ohm and my amp is a two-channel. The directions in the amp suggest to bridge the sub if using it as a mono speaker, but they only use one sub. Would using two make a difference? I'm not sure what you mean by saying that I have them hooked up parallel, but I have both positive wires hooked up to one channels positive and both negatives to the second channels negative.
By the way, when I say my amp is cutting out it just shuts off and a light on the amp comes on that reads "Over Current". The amp comes back on after turning the ignition off then on. Thanks for your help!

Message: Albert:
from what you described there you are going to blow your amp very soon!!! time for speaker wiring101 class here... lol...
as with ALL speakers there is a resistance rating on them (4,8,12 etc ohm or a symbol that resembles a horse shoe with a number beside it). if you take 2 8ohm speakers and hook them together in parallel ++ and -- you drop your resistance by 1/2 so u are left with a 4ohm load. if you hook them up in series +- -+ you double your resistance and are left with a 16ohm load. the less resistance the power you have.... the more resistance the more power it takes to drive the speakers.
as DarkFury described most amps aren't 2 ohm stable bridged (mono)however they are 2ohm stable stereo. what that means in a 4 ohm 1 speaker system you can bridge the channels as 1 and run it fine.... if the amp ISN'T 2ohm stable mono and you hook up 2 speakers in parallel you are overdriving your transistors in your amp and will fry them in a hurry. it's like taking an engine that redlines at 5000RPM and revving it to 8000RPM..... NOT GOOD!!!
what i would suggest to you is use that amp and drive your mid/tweeter speakers and purchase a quality amp that is 2ohm stable mono OR a 4/3/2 amp like the MTX 4240 that i am running in my DAK and bridge the sub channels as 1. i have my bass gain cranked and the other gains running approx. 90% and have NEVER had it cut out once. and it's LOUD!!!! if you have ANY further questions regarding this matter or other stereo matters e-mail me directly if u like lowe_scott@hotmail.com i hope this helped you out although a lengthy post it should help alot of other people in the same deliema.

Message: Yup... just like I had figured in my previous post.
Scott hit the nail on the head... however I have another "less costly" suggestion...
As I mentioned before, if you don't have/want to spend the money on another "more stable and lower ohmage" amplifier (like one of the Class "D" offerings from MTX), then you can rewire your system so that each sub is connected to one channel of your current amp... Like I said before, you won't be pushing the power that you are now, however your amp should be able to handle each 10" woofer at 4 Ohms per channel... thus saving your amp from an IMPENDING DEATH if you continue down the route you are going now.
Personally, if money is an object, I would rewire your setup immediately and then after you get a better, more stable amp, you rewire it back to how you have it set up now...
Hopefully you will take care of this soon before you cause some serious damage to your stereo. Good luck man...

Message: You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the input. I will definately re-wire my amp tomarrow but I was wondering, if I replaced my 4 ohm subs with two 8 ohm subs, those could be bridged successfully without damaging the amp because they would put be cut in half to 4 ohm on the amp, right? The only reason I bought the 4 ohm is because the guy at Best Buy recommended them and told me to bridge them together.

| RE: MTX Thunderform Box Pics IP: Logged
Message: Yes... you could do that as well, but you ultimately end up with the same result... spending more money.
If you have the cash, your best bet is to buy a better amp... Good amps ultimately last WAY longer than good speakers (especially considering that speakers are made from paper/foam and deteriorate over time.) Personally, I would recommend this offering from DigitalWavez.com. This is a MTX Thunder 4250D mono block "Class D" amp...250 Watts at 4 Ohms mono and 350 Watts at 2 Ohms mono... which is what you are doing now.) I would take the Sony amp you are using now and use it to run your door and rear quarter panel speakers instead (if you can find a good place to mount it...)
Obviously the guy at "Beast Buy" didn't know sh@t about amplifiers and their abilities to run stable at low ohm loads... shame on him! However, if you have a decent amp, you can really have a killer sound due to the fact that you can increase your power levels without having to worry about destabilizing your unit.
I personally have had a 2 Ohm stable mono amp (a HiFonics Hercules - 375 Watts) that I have been using for almost 10 years now and it still kicks major stereo butt! I have changed my speakers 3 times in that period, but the amp lives on...
If you get a "good" amp, then all the rest of the pieces will fall into place.

Message: 4ohm + 4ohm VC's would be a 2ohm not a 1ohm load. whoever said that the 3way 6.5" speakers would give better sound quality was mistaken, the super-tweeters don't round out the sound they shift the frequney response way to high and accually sound worse than decent 2 way speakers. also, whoever was running the polk components off the head unit, you are not getting nearly the SQ or volume you could if you amped them, you head unit only puts out like 15wRMS the speakers can handle up to 150wRMS i think (didnt go back and check) so you should give them at least a solid 45-50wRMS to achieve their potential. i think i had other things to say about the posts here but imtoo lazy to reread it all. hope this helps someone.
