Subject: Paint Job IP: Logged
Message: I have a White-ish 1991 Dodge Dakota Extended Cab. I was wondering
if anybody ever heard about when they made the '91 Dakotas about a
problem in the pain that would cause it to chip faster then a normal
paint job from the year before or year after.
Also I have another question, what steps can be done to manually
remove rust w/o taking it to an auto body shop?

Message: The only thing I can think of, as far as paint chipping more easily is EPA restictions. Also this may have the time when "experiments" were made to conform to SPA standards.
As far as rust, that depends on what type you have, although the principle is the same. For surface rust, alot of times you can try wet/dry sand paper high grit like 2000,or even a scothbrite pad. this will minimize surface damge to surrounding paint. Deeper rust, you may have to bust out lower grit like 120, its really hard to say without looking, or knowing what you have. Are you planning to prime over the sanded portions? If you plan on re-painting, you will probably have a tough time blending new to old paint. Good luck

Message: I got my truck from my dad, who did Nothing about the paint job. He would rather let it sit and rust then take it in to get the paint job fixed or the rust taken off. So now, if the rust on that truck is gonna be taken off it will be me having to pay for it. I'd love to re-paint my truck because I hate white vehicles!

Message: Alan, My dad has a white '91 Dodge Spirit, and it's had a lot of paint problems. One chip on the hood and the roof, and the rest of the paint just breaks away. We were able to convince the dealer that there was something wrong with the paint from the factory. I think we paid like $300 for the entire car to get repainted, dealer paid for the rest. You could try to talk to the dealer, your paint might be the same as my dad's.

Message: Well, I can't do that because we didn't get the truck from an EXCATE Dealership. IT was formally a work truck for the kind of job my dad had in south western Indiana. What happeend to yoru dad's vehicle happened to mine, now what chipped away is mainly rusted.

Message: I have a 92 ext cab that had the same problem. Lots of
Chrysler vehicles in the early 90's had paint problems.
They switched to a water based paint system and the
color coat didnt adhere to the primer properly. The
result was paint that peeled off all over the vehicle.
Unfortunately, the only way to fix it right is to grind the
truck down to bare metal and start over. I made a
custom out of my dak this past summer and that is what
I had to do. It is an unbelievable amount of work. To
have a shop grind it down and repaint it would cost
thousands upon thousands of dollars. In my opinion,
the only reasonable way to do it is to do it yourself.

Message: my 93 has that same problem. so the only way is to go down to bare metal? if i do that myself and get it primered will a body shop paint it for me? or will they want to do all of it themselves?

Message: kacivic...I have heard of people doing spot repairs of
the damaged areas...but I dont think I'd take that
chance. Some shops might spray it for you after it is
prepped, but dont expect them to offer any sort of
warranty on the work. They dont know how well the
surface was prepared so it would be taking a huge risk
on their part to warranty it. If a shop does agree to paint
it for you, make sure that the primer you use is part of
the same paint system that they will be using. Just ask
the shop and they will be able to tell you what primer to
use.

Message: I lowered it 4" in front and 5" out back. Its a little too low
in the front though....keep hitting the damn crossover
pipe on speedbumps. I might raise it back up another
inch in front, but Im going to wait and see how it sits
once the new wheels and tires are on it. I'm getting
impatient.....ordered some boyd's rims a couple weeks
ago, but it will probably still be another 3 before they
come in. Hopefully they will be worth the wait though!!

Message: does anyone have any kind of guess/estimate how much it would cost to get all this painted: Hood, Grille, Front Bumper, Roll Pan, 3 left side skirts, and 3 right side skirts?
