If you've got a 98 or newer (looking at your other post on gear oil you do), no speedo gear change is necessary. According to CW, 98 and newer use wheel speed sensors...I have no reason to doubt him since he's a Dodge tech. And he was right on mine...I recently changed the front and rear gears on my 4X4 and the speedo stayed where it was before the gear swap...reads a little low because I'm running larger than stock tires.

They guy who did my gears put in synthetic fluid...I can't remember exactly what weight, but I do know it was a multi-weight somewhere in the range of 80-120.

Say it with Krylon!

Thank you so much I have had a hard time getting responses from this board.
I do appreciate it very much. Yes mine is a 98 v6 I pulled the gears out myself and attached to the carrier is this large flat gear with a lot of teeth and it lines up with the sensor coming out of the 3rd member housing, the sensor is located on the top of the pumpkin. I just assumed that this was the speed sensor because the carrier turns as fast as the ring gear.
Does anyone know what this thing is then???

That is for the speed sensor. It turns with the tires thus gear changes don't affect it but tire changes do. To ket your speedometer correct if you've changed tires get the Superlift Tru-speed or KRC gear box.

Today my ABS and brake warning indicators came on. When I go around corners my speedometer drops to zero for about 15 seconds. The truck runs normal as always though. The Dodge advisor I talked to said it was a speed sensor problem. He said it would take about an hour to fix.

So, how hard is it to change this sensor and where is it? I have a 99 Dakota Club Cab with 5 spd?

How much would one charge to reprogram for larger tires. I have the stock ones and I am thinking of getting 31X10.5 and mounting them either on stock rims or on steel stamped rims. Would I need to do this as I only have the stock 255X65 15R (if memory serves me right).

Are there any concerns that I should be aware of. There are no suspension mods as of yet..

I have a 1999 Sport with V6/5spd and I started it up this morning to find the BRAKE and ABS light on, plust the speedometer is INOP below 20 mph. I had a Durango that did the same thing but it was under warranty, so I didnt do the work myself. MY QUESTION: How hard is it to do? I can read a book once and do it myself, but was just wondering.

I have a similar problem. I have larger tires (33's) and I installed the KRC (abbot) gear box. All went well with installing and I have the speedo right on the mark but only one problem. The ABS wants to surge and activate when I stop. I noticed that when you go up in the ratio away from 1.00 it intensifies, when you go back down in ratio the ABS goes back to normal. What I'm trying to do is override the RWAL solenoid. I really don't give a hoot for the ABS but I want to shut it off with out interferring with speedo. Any suggestions? And I just want to say this is an awesome site for our trucks. Wouldn't know what to do with out it. Thanks, Greg

nope...they can only set it for stock tires...you'll have to look into getting a Truspeed Speedometer Calibrator from superlift to correct this

Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full.

I talked Marty at KRC Performance and he said that's never happened to him before on any vehicle. He said to re-check the wiring that was installed for the box. There might be a problem with the length of the wire or a bad connection. Time to go back and re-check everything. Greg

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango. I also had the ABS light and brake light come on, and my speedometer would not work below 25mph. I purchased the rear speed sensor from my local Dodge dealership for $31.75 I replaced it myself with just a wrench and 2 sockets and 30 minutes. Instructions come with the replacement part and it was a breeze. It fixed all of my problems. :)

dpepper152, replace the wheel speed sensor on top of the pumpkin. That should solve your problems. The part is around $40.
