Subject: Wheel Depth and Tire Size IP: Logged
Message: How do you know how deep your wheels need to be for the tires? My Dakota came with 18x8 chrome wheels. Tires sizes are given like 265/60R18 but nothing is said about the depth. If I want to go up in tire size, how do I know if I need deeper (8.5, 9, 9.5...) rims?

Message: Depends what you mean by "up in tire size."
Taller or wider?
265/60R18 is same as 31x10.5x18.
1/2" wider (31x11x18) would be 280/60/18.
A reputable tire dealer will be able to recommend optimum wheel depth based on desired tire size.

Message: As a general rule, take your rim width and add 3.5" for the max tire width for that rim.

Message: Thats a good general rule just remember that the less sidewall you have the closer to the rim width you have to stay with the tires.

Message: Also, the less sidewall you have, the more chance to ruin a tire by curbing it, potholes and off-road stuffs.
