Subject: Body Lift for First-gen Dak IP: Logged
Message: I have a couple of older Dakotas, an 87 and an 88. The 87 has a perfect southern body and the 88 has a regular old rusty Minnesotan body, but it's on a 3.9 5speed 4x4 frame, and I'm doing a body swap (putting the nice 87 body on the 4x4 frame). I also want to add a body lift, probably 2 or 3 inches, whatever. 1: What are some good body lift kits for my first-gen Dak? 2: 31" tires would easily clear with that, right? and 3: Is that pre-bent Flowmaster exhaust system with dual tailpipes I see on Ebay worth the money or would I be better off havin my favorite exhaust shop throw somethin on for me?

Message: hey. im wondering the same thing on the body lift. i have an 87 dak too. as for the exhaust go to your local exhaust and ask them how much it would be to have them do it. my local exhaust shop said 275-300 for cat back with flow 40 series dual out with tips. so i mean if its like 200 on ebay after shipping and everything it seems better to go to your local shop. just my 2 cents.

Message: Performance accessories make 2 and 3 inch body lifts for the gen1 trucks. They bolt right on. Did mine litterally by my self with a block of wood and a floor jack. DOnt go with duals either your gonna lose to much back pressure. Just go with a flowmaster 40 and drop it off right before the axle. Sounds great and rumbels a bit. I got my lift for 87 bucks i belive. I called summit and they quit selling P.A. kits, but they gave me there number. I called them and they gave me a local shop that carryd them. Good luck with the trucks....
BTW you chould beable to almost fit 31 inchers now. I have 33's...... DOnt forget to tighten them torsion bars a little bit also. Get ya another inch almost in the front...

Message: Sweet! Yeah, and I think a dual outlet muffler would sound better than true dual exhaust on a V6 anyways, I don't want a ricy sounding big ass Dakota. How much is the 3" P.A. kit? What's Performance Accesories number? I'm gonna hafta give 'em a call. And as for the torsion bars, I'm kinda new to 4x4s, as the 87 I've been drivin is a 2wd; how do I tighten those up and get the extra clearance?

Message: I did the body lift and the tires fit. I cranked the torsion bars so that the truck would level out. PA does have a 3 inch lift for gen1 trucks..... It bolts right on. Did mine by myself in about 3 hours!!!

Message: Well.. that sounds easy enough. I was just wondering about rubbing, Cause mine seems to turn to sharp anyway' dont know if this is normal for the 4x4's of that era, but if I'm on gravel and I turn all the way either direction it tries to shove the truck staight ahead I'm so use to it I seldom turn it that far, But it might make a difference with the big tires

Message: Does anybody know of anyone that makes a suspension lift for first-gen Daks? Otherwise, I heard from someone that you can modify one for a 91-96 to work, although that takes a lot of time and work.
