Subject: limiting straps? anyone ever installed. IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone here ever installed a set of limiting straps on a dakota?
just curious I'm abit strapped for funds right now and this will hold me off until I can get hew upper arms. However if it works well I may use it as a 6-7month fix, as I have gotten used to the ride with hardly any downward travel.

Message: What is limiting your downward travel right now? If you put on limiting straps you will lose even more downward travel. Maybe im missing something here.

You ain't missing a thing. That is exactly what they are for. If Conig has stock upper control arms and he has cranked hit T-bars, then they are probably making contact sooner tan later. On this particular front end they would do nothing more than be a visual display.

Message: I think that conig (if its the same one) has a 2wd and that is my main concern. He doesnt have tbars to crank. Another thing is why would you spend the money on limiting straps that are just for looks? Thats almost as bad as the people that drive around with a nice new winch that they will never use (atleast in my opinion).

Message: trhe limiting straps are not just for looks, they will keep my upper a rams from hitting the frame. I don't have rocks, mountains sand dunes or desert were I live so they will suit my purpose, I realy do not need that much downward travel.
The only thing we have is mud, and honestly the time in the mud isn't worth the time cleaning, in my honest opinion.

Message: What causes so much downward travel if you dont do sand, rocks, or mud? Also what will you gain with limiting straps? The stock upper arms are just bumpstops there and the limiting straps will serve the same purpose.

Message: correct but the limiting straps, won't be metal to metal contact, and the contact will not be as rough since they stretch a tad. I wouldn't be a fan of hitting the bump stops either. I want limiting straps to limit the travel.

Message: where is the metal to metal contact coming in to play? there should be a rubber or polyurithane bumpstop in the equation somewhere. if you have metal to metal, you have a different problem to address. the only time i have seen limiting straps is when you are running a long travel coil over shock with a straight axle. And besides that, how would you mount a limiting strap to a control arm? what about adjustable valved shocks, that way you could adjust the compression and rebound rates, that could help the ride abit. But if your not in sand, rocks, mountains or mud, where are you driving a grassy feild? Just doesnt make sense.

Message: on the street. limiting straps can be installed to the control arm. theres a short article in this moths issue of trucking on them.
the metal to metal contact is the upper control arms hitting the frame, dodge did not put bump stops here, nor is there room to add them.
Yes control arms would come in the future, but I just bought a house and am strapped for cash. this is an under 100.00 temporary fix before buying a 400.00 control arms.
I was never questioning the practivality of the set up, yes theres more practical ways to solve this issue, and yes there are better ways to set up a lifted truck. my truck drives 1/2 amile a day to work. and then maybe 2miles once every couple of days to the girls house or the local waterburger for a show and shine. I don't need it to be a badass offroad setup. I just need the upper arms to stop anoying me, rides fine in my opinion, just don't like the sound.

Message: I know that we are questioning your reasoning more than we are answering your question, but what lift are you running that is bottoming out your a-arm? The main reason i ask is because I have a 2" on mine and I dont have a problem at all, but the 3" comes with new arms. Also to answer your question it is going to be difficult because all hardcore offroaders are the ones who use limiting straps. They all also use solid axles whereas you need someone with ifs. I really dont know how to make it work for independent front 2wd. I would guess that you just bolt to the lower arm and the frame. You dont have anywhere to mount it to if you use the upper arm because you do want to use the frame. Also since independent goes out from the frame i dont know how easy of a task it would be. On a solid axle setup, they just hang it from the frame to the top of the axle. A thought also would be to make it beside the shocks through the coil since you dont have any travel anyway. Only suggestions.

Message: correct I use a 2inch coil spacer which gives three inches of lift. I didn't really have problems before, but the moog ball joints design is also affecting the travel. the coil spacers don't come with new arms. I also can't afford new arms at this time.
and correct you bolt them to the lower arms and then to the frame at a mild angle that does not hit the tire or suspension. Atleast that what I gathered from the paragraph in the latest trucking. 10 important things to get for your lifted truck.
I knew my reasoning would be questiond from the begining. However I beleive this would work, I was looking more for experiances. the shortest strap I can find is 10 inches, and it doesn't come with an adjustable clevis.

Message: I used to have the 2" doesch coils engine specific for the V8. They gave almost 3" and I had the same problem. Speed bumps and dips were a little annoying. It is straight metal hitting with the upper arm. I got used to it too. Have your upper ball joints gone out? Mine did after a few months. I think my truck had 19000 miles then. I put in the fabtech 3" when they went bad. It rides really good.

Message: yeah my ball joints went out, it didn't seem as bad before, but my mechanic told me with the new ball joints I was pushing it. he said they were hitting. I've checked clearance and they are no but still looking for a fix before I get the A-Arms. I'm also trying to figure a way to do an even bigger craddle lift setup.

Message: It looks like it will be cheeper to just switch to 1.5 inch spacers for 2 inches of lift. It appears I will bve able to still run my 31-12.50's from the measurments I did. but I guess the actual instilation will tell.

Message: probably for a 4wd ifs though. And magazines tend to give you really good instructions for one specific vehicle and not in general. I think that it is more worth your time and money to go with the 1.5 coil spacers. That will give you the equivalent lift of a 2" coil. I have 2" coils and a 3" body and im running 32's with rubbing, but rubbing isnt that bad when its only at full lock. 31" tires and the same should be fine. Are you not the same conig that was a member cuz i could have sworn you had 33" tires and a fabtech 3" lift?

Message: as far as I know I am the only conig. I havn't had 33's or a fabtech. 2inch spacer 1.5 add a leave. 31-12.50 ex terrains on weld 15x10's 3.63 back spacing.
