Subject: wheels and bs IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2002 dakota ext cab 4x4 and am wondering if with a 3in rancho and 3in PA body lift i will be able to fit 35x12.50x16 on stock 16x8, or will i have to go to a 15x8 rim. I really don't know much about backspacing and i'm looking at a mickey thompson classic II. Also, if i do decide just to go with the 3in PA lift, will i have to crank the torsion bars. Any help would be great, thanks

Message: Well , there are a few people here running, what measures out to be , 33X12.50-16s on the stock 16X8s , so I can`t see why a 35 wouldn`t fit just as good or better , especially with the added sidewall height.
2THEXTRM has the Rancho and PA lifts and is using a 35 in tall tire , just on a larger rim , and I don`t think he is having any rubbing problems.
Looks like it should work.

Message: i appreciate that. I thought they would fit, i just was confused how the rancho 3in lift claims that 33x12.50 will rub, yet those tires fit under a 3 body lift. shouldn't it be the same??

Message: The might mean you have to use a different off-set than the factory rims ,due to the rims rubbing on the susp. with the use of the new steering knuckle, I`m not sure. Someone that has the Rancho lift should be able to verify that, or not.
Also , with the factory backspacing the 33s will rub the front area of the frame at full lock , it is very minimal but they do touch , so that could be what they are talking about. I`d imagine that the 35s will rub just a little bit more , but I`d rather they rubbed the frame than sheetmetal.

Message: 33's on stock BS of 5.5" at 12.5 will not go on the hub. They will rub on the upper ball joint.
With no lift they rub on the frame just barley at full turn.
I preffered to stay on stock rims and run 285x75x16 AT's and 33x10.5x15 MT's. Lots of reasons I went that way. Mostly for OFF Road reasons. I have 33x12.5x15 MT's not mounted but I will be mounting those on some 15x7 GEN II rims with 5" of BS. I think these may work. It does on paper but I also have some 1/4" spacers incase I need some more room.
If you do run 12.5 on the setup you want to put on I think you will need atleast 4-4.5" of BS on the rims you buy.
I will say this, Right after I had the lift on and I found out that I could not run the 33x12.5x15 MT's I borrowed a buddies set of AE 589 15x8 with 3.5" of BS 32x11.5x15 MT's on and they rubbed in the wheel well.
Bottom line Rims and BS are key if you are gonna wheel it. If you are only doing it for looks then you probably will get an occasional rub on a driveway but Off road when articulating / flexing you will rub.
If you have not seen my site I have some photo's of me fully stuffing from flexing a 33 up in the well deep as far as it would go, you will also notice the tire pretty much fills the well with about less than 1" of clearance. I think if a 35 were stuffed up in there it would rub but you would really have to stuff it, articulate it to get it to do this.
Only trying to offer what I learned!
Here is more info from a post on backspacing. There is another somewhere that had a good photo.

Message: thanks for the help guys. I'm planning on going for the 3 and 3 lift, with maybe a small torsion crank to give some more room for articulation. as soon as i can come up with some funds i'll let ya know how it turns out with plenty of pics. thank again for the info
