Message: Well it totally depends on the engine and year truck u have.
If you have one of the newer trucks with the V8 it isn't NEEDED...but could be something you want to look into.
If you got the V6 you are definetly going to want the 3.92 gears to help out your truck.

Message: AJ,
To be honest, i don't really think u need gears if all you are going to tow is jet-skis. I got the 3.9L with 3.92 and i do fine with a load larger than that. Your V8 should take it all fine, i'd save the $1200 and get something else that might be more useful, like a rear locker for off-roading or a nice Hanson front bumper. For the $1200 you could just do a few nice performance parts and have more power, but the 33" tires and your 5.2L should be fine to your tranny.
Wait till the whole thing is on and see if you feel a big change in power, it's totally fine to upgrage gears, but i know guys with the 3.9L and 3.92 that run 33"s fine, and your 5.2L with 3.55 makes more power than the V6 with 3.92s.
I'd say save your money and put it towards some other off-road goodies, another jet-ski, or put it in the bank.
My $.02 cents.

Message: I hear you about the tranny. If I hit any kind of an incline on the highway, my truck downshifts to keep speed. In town, I keep my overdrive off to help from changing gears so much, but I am still afraid I am going to ruin my tranny. I just wish re-gearing was a little cheaper. But I guess it's cheaper than putting in a new transmission a year down the road, so I am going to try and save up for the gears. By the way, mine is a 5.2L with 3.55's. I haven't decided yet whether I want the 3.92's or the 4.10's.

Message: yes, the 3.92s will bring it closer to stock than the 4.10s. If my math is correct, a 3.76 (which is not available) with 33's would be equal to 3.55 with 31's.

Message: I was very amazed on my trip down to LA in MY V-6 3.92 gears running 33's. I stayed away from Cruise control and footed it all the way. I was not kicking back and forth out of OD, but I did shift down when I noticed a steep hill approaching. I climb the Grapevine no problem out of OD loaded down with a little weight. I thought for sure I would end up in second or something going about 40 MAX. But no it busted that hill out! I may do a gear change some day but that is not a big item on my now small list!
I do agree with Arthur. Your V-8 should mussle it pretty good and put something on your truck to give it something special and maybe different from the rest.
Its your money though and you may really find this what you want/ need.

| New Gears & Tire Clearance IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys:
I'm a single mom with a black '99 Durango, 5.2L, 4X4, 3.55 limited slip. My teenage daughter's boyfriend decided to trick out my D, and while I was on vacation, threw on a 3" body lift, 1" torsion lift, and a set of BFG A/T 305-70-R16's on 16x8 Ventura wheels (of course he charged all of the parts to an account I have at a local accessory store). Nonetheless, I was quite happy with the "new and improved" look. I just need to iron out some bugs and was hoping for suggestions. First, the tires aren't clearing the frame when I turn hard in either direction. They were rubbing severely on the fenders when turning outward, but we shaved some fiberglass off to solve the exterior clearance problem. Still, they're hitting the frame when turning inward, and also, when I go over a dip and turn at the same time, I'm hitting the tires somewhere inside the fenderwell. Second, my gas mileage has obviously dropped (a whopping 10mpg)so we put in a K&N intake filter which bumped the mpg's to 12. The biggest problem now is the D seems to really bog down on the freeway and is constantly downshifting out of O.D. to compensate, which I'm assuming has a lot to do with the poor gas mileage. I've been told I should buy new gears, but also have been told that chipping it will allow the computer to recompensate and will do everything that the new gears would, but for less money. Can someone recommend what I should do to get the D shifting properly again? I appreciate any suggestions :) P.S. Just got back from the annual Easter Jeep Jamboree in Moab, UT and saw an awesome black Durango with a major suspension lift. Perhaps a suspension lift will be the only way to solve my clearance problems, without dropping tire/wheel size, lol!

Message: Black Widow,
I have the same set up that you do except I have a 2k D w/ 4.7L. I am planning to swap gears to 4.10's, and am awaiting hypertech to come out w/ the PPIII. In your case you may be able to get away w/ just the Hypertech PPIII for your 5.2L. If nothing else you will have better performance and recalibrated speedo for the tires. As far as the rubbing on the frame at full lock you could try some different wheels w/ less backspacing if you wanted new wheels? Just some recomendations?

Message: I heard that if you all ready have the Limited Slip Differential then you dont have to change it out when doing a gear swap. Is this true? Cuz i know it would be cheaper if i didnt have to buy the LSD. I plan on going from 3.55's to 3.92's. Now this may be a very dumb question but im dumb so bare with me,,,my truck specs say that i have Anti-spin differential, is that the same as Limited Slip differential. Thanks people

No you don't have to change your differential when changing gears, but if you were planning on changing it that would be the time. Limited slip is the same thing as Anti-spin. If you decide to upgrade the LSD to say Auburn, Trac-lok, or what have you you are just basically getting a better quality unit. It is not totally necessary unless you spend a great deal of your time off roading, but it is up to you.

Message: Don't waste your time and money lifting your Duck. I have a '99 with a 318, 5spd, k&n, 3" pipe, 392 gears and the Rancho 3"ish lift. I'm running 33x12.5x15's and can't pull anything worth a hoot and that's with a 5spd. However, if you do lift your duck then I guarentee you that 355 gears wont cut it. I would recomend at least 4.10's, but 4.56's would be best. Again, I wouldn't wast your money upgrading your Dakota, you would be better off buying a jeep. Call Joel up at Stage West (970/945-5227 http://www.stagewest4x4.com/)for your gears, he won't screw you.
Also, I have a limited slip in mine.

Thanks for the advice. Just so you know, Hypertech has released the PPIII and I did a quick search on the net and found it on www.hotrodoffroad.com for $320. Probably can beat that price with a little searching. I'm going to order one, so will advice as to any improvements it makes.

Message: BlackWidow,
I tried searching for hotrodoffroad.com and couldn't find anything matching that? Is that the correct site and/or spelling? I am very interested in the PPIII and would like to know who has it. I also contacted Hypertech today via e-mail and they replied that there isn't anything available yet for the 4.7L (in my case). Also I just finish installing the Fastman TB and an IP Z-tube intake last week on my D and would highly recomend them for performance gains if you haven't already and are interested.
