Message: I have a Detroit locker in the back. It was a full carrier change. You maybe able to get a Power Trax for your axel just depends on what type. It is cheaper and easier to install from what I understand.
New to the board? There are allot of good discussions regarding this with awesome info if you want to do a search to get more detail.
This is all I can give.
The locker is a great thing, I love mine, but it does have some draw backs so beware so you know what you are getting.

Message: This prolly old news for us regulars and could be looked up with with the Search function, but.... what are the drawbacks so far for the Detroit Locker? A local shop will install my rear DL for $750 and that seems like a good deal to me. Obviously the street is not where the DL excels in tire wear and noise, but traction is, so other than tire wear and "push" while cornering on asphalt, what are the downfalls of having the locker? I plan on having the DL installed this spring also unless decided otherwise as I am sick of spinning one tire on uneven ground or while cornering at WOT:)
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: 2thextrem,
You said it, that was all I could think of as draw backs. Street driving, chirping, driving in heavy rain on the roads. Just the stuff that if you do not know up front it may concern you once you get it in and drive it. Not implying that it was a bad why to go though.
Did you get buy your locker and have it installed for that price?
The Powertrax is a easy install and a cheaper way to go. No carrier change.

Message: $750 was parts and labor. I will be setting up the appointment prolly next week to have it done, drop it off at lunch, pick it up after work:)
I was looking at Powertrax, the prices have jumped alot since xmas at truckperformance.com, not sure why, maybe demand went up or something.

Message: Hey Bob you may want to pay a couple 100 more and step up to 3.92's. You'll need them for those 35's I see in yourr future.
FYI: I was quoted $1250 to put 4.10's in mine with the rear staying with the stock LSD. He said if I wanted a locker it would be the cost of parts only.

Message: I just installed a 4.10 gear with a stock limited slip posi unit (off e-bay) recently and it was well worth it. E-bay is deffinately not too bad a way of getting a posi unit for these vehicles. If anyone wants I'll e-mail the guy who sold it to me. He said he has more for the 10 bolt Daks. Greg

Message: My Detroit Locker cost me about $700. and the rear end shop that I was gonna have install it wanted $100.00. After further discussion I found this guy to be very difficult to work with and ended up having my mechanic do it which cost me more but it got done right.

Message: I thought about adding lower gears for the likelihood of 35's:) I'll prolly run the 33's for one more summer before I go bigger, give me time to save for the 18" wheels/35" tire package I want;) I'll keep the 33 Xterrains for offroading. For what the gears are costing, I'm trying to hold out for 4.10's to finally be made for my transfer case and will upgrade then, prolly adding 35's then. Hopefully I won't have to wait that long, otherwise I'll be trying to pick-up some barely used stock 3.92's and have them put in before I go up another size in tire.
Now that you got me thinkin Corey, I may hold off on the locker right now until I figure out what I will be doing as far as gearing, would be cheapest/smartest to have it all done at once. Thanks:)

Message: Possibly dumb question,
How do I determine what diff. I have?
Its a 2000 Dak 4x4 SLT.
How do the gears relate to tire/wheel size? Is this a question of power or speed?

Message: Yep, it's 3.92.
Also in the glove box it says the rear is 3850# with anti-slip.
If I have limited slip, it's never worked. Also, what does the 3850 represent? My dif looks like the 8.25 corp with 10 bolt pattern instead of 9.25 corp with 12 bolts.. was my axle replaced at some point?

Message: Wait a sec, what is it that Toyotas use? Arent they Air Lockers, that you can engage and disengage from the cab? Couldnt you buy a similar package and engage it kinda like 4x4? Sounds to me like a couple of you put in lockers, and they are always locked, and you cant disengage it? IS this making any sense right now? hehe
Also, if you can get the lockers that lcok from the cab, you could actually do the front and the back for 4x4's and ahve a pretty kickass crawler right?

Message: yeah the lockers u are thinking of are activated by air pressure u have to buy a small compressor to mount in the engine compartment and when u want positive traction u hit a switch in your cab that makes the compressor force air into your rear or front end forcing the locker to kick in. so that way when your driving down the road u can have an open diff with none of the drawbacks of posi, or when your off roading u can have posi.
