hi i have saved enough pennies and live in a small town where no one does big mods. i have an 03 dakota r/t and want to supercharge it. the only mods i have are a jetchip, a flowmaster single dual out exhaust, and jba headers. i was thinking about an 1" spacer and a cam . my truck has 6500 miles on it. also if i supercharge it what else will i need to do and will my torque converter and tranny handle the power. i know procharger, kenne bell, vortec and powerdyne all make blowers what would be the best one for me? ideally i dont want to have to redo my motor but have been told i will prob need different head gaskets. is this true?

Honestly, if I were you I'd go ahead and switch over to head studs and a good head gasket such as SCE's copper line, I believe they sell some that you can run on the street that have a copper ring arround the combustion chambers but the rest is like a normal gasket. As far as the supercharger goes a low boost version of it should not require beefed up internals, that's some serious power adder if it does. I would personally make sure and get the "true" 24lb hr injectors and the Roe Racing controller from KRC performance ( www.KRCperformance.com ) to be able to adjust your air fuel ratio and keep it in the safe range, as far everything else goes it seems like you are in good shape so far. Just stay away from a cam that has a large ammount of overlap if you plan on going with a blower and don't buy a 1" spacer, its just a waste of money.

I've seen too many S/C trucks with tuning problems
For every 1 dailed in S/C truck I've seen I'll bet there are 20 that run mid 14's. Unless you have a great deal of experience dealing with that sort of thing I would not atempt it.
If I were looking for a instant power adder I'd go with NOS. It does not get ANY simpler. One injector dump NOS in and another dumps fuel in.

well i def want to go the supercharged way, cause i have heard that nos wears down your motor quicker. and to drew how small of a boost do u consider small? i know powerdyne has a 6lb and procharger has a 8-9 with an intercooler. what would be the cut off point for boost? and if u were gonna go with a cam what size and brand would u choose for a supercharged application? will there be any damage to my torque converter or tranny?

I would consider 6psi for a non intercooled system just about right for pump gas and 8-9 on the intercooled system the same. Both will give you noticeable gains in power, but the intercooled one will give you even more than the non intercooled one, it is also a little easier on your motor, far less detonation prone. As far as torque converter goes your probably going to be fine with your stock one, however I would advise a trans go shift kit and a good trans cooler, but at the very least get the cooler. You should have a factory cooler going to the radiator, just cut those lines and add it somewhere that has quite a bit of airflow over it (just infront of the radiator)

Hey Ray,
Supercharge that thing man. I have 00 R/T cc and ati procharger @ 10 lbs. I agree with slow r/t that after purchasing a supercharger it is not as easy bolting it on and running 13's or 12's. It has taken me a few months to get my truck running at its peak performance. The first run i made after installing the supercharger was a horrid 14.6, then 14.2, and then 13.6. I ran a 13.6 on radials w/spare tire and tailgate. The fastest i have been so far has been a 13.38 @101.7mph on radials w/spare and tailgate. Right now iam having severe traction problems. The only mods i have are Borla Catback, ATI Procharger/Intercooler, Mopar Pcm, Split Second Ftc-1, autolite 3923's, and 180 t-stat. The track is closed now but next season i am hoping for high 12's w/slicks.
As for max boost you can run that depends on your ability to tune and supply the vehicle with adequate fuel as well as reducing the temp of the charged air the supercharger is supplying through use of an intercooler/aftercooler. From my experience simply purchasing a supercharger kit is not enough and to correctly tune requires fuel pressure guage, a/f guage, as well as some method to retard timing, such as msd btm or the Split second controller which i am using. The tuning is a pain but the end result is well worth it. Also i have had no tranny problems yet but a shift kit is highly recommended.

I sell both the Powerdyne and Vortech/Paxton setups-- If you want to power for racing purposes-- get a NX kit (I sell that too)-- It's far cheaper, an easy straightforward install--- and you'd be able to purchase a set or rocker arms, a cam, and heads with the $$$ you'd have left over (that would have had to spend on a blower).

With NX, heads (1.92 RT heads), 1.7s, a mild cam-- (M1 which I already had), PPH headers... 100 shot of NX = 12.62@108.9, a weak 150 shot = 12.52 @109.9--- that's what I ran.

Slicks are required with NX-- The price of slicks is a small investment for anyone racing (blown or NX)-- saves your street tires, and should last a year or two-- unless you are a Don Garlits burnout junkie at the track! ;)

NOS does have a reputation for tearing up motors but like anything else it need set up properly. Have you ever heard a nitrous motor run? they sound like every gear is 1st! They have a distict smell to them too. Maybe its the rings burning up! HA, I made a funny

thanks guys for all your input. but up here i dont think i will be racing it. i may take a trip to the track once next summer but our track is only an 8th mile. So anyway what u r basically all telling me is i am not gonna get out of this cheap? how money roughly do u figure it will cost to do all this? i have to pay a garage to install all this stuff. and if i show them this stuff will they know what u guys are talking about? cause to me its all jibberish.

and still i dont know which blower to go with i am guessing the procharger.has anyone heard bad things abbout them or good? i havent heard anyone talk about them. so if i was to make out a pasrt list i would need the supercharger, trans go shift kit..(whatever that is)my truck is an automatic does that matter? a good trans cooler (how do i go about finding that?)and my cam which i have heard no recommendations on? head studs and good head gaskets? is there anything i am forgetting? and by the way does anyone wanna set up a supercharger my r/t fund for me please!!! again thanks for all your input

I had it installed at a tranny shop. The owner is a close friend of mine so he let me help/watch. Man it took about 7 hours!! He charged me 125$ and I felt that was fair do to the amount of work.
Well half the pieces in the trango kit did not fit as they were supposed to with out a little filling or grinding here and there. I guess that was no big deal. They tell you to file a notch in the side of the valve body and do not say why or what it does. I guess that was no big deal. I choose the full race mode of the shift kit. It can be set up for towing or street or race. The instructions say you have to remove the overdrive housing to install the last return spring (race mode) But with four hands and a couple screw drivers it can be done without removing it. you also have to solder a resister into the wiring harness. after all this was done I went for a test drive. Well shifting was alot faster and alittle firmer. The shifts were delayed about 300 rpm also. Also the stock tranny does not circulate fluid while in park, ever notice after your truck has been sitting for awhile and you put it in gear and it does not "engage" right off the bat? the shift kit fixes that. But at WOT it shifts at 4500. Thats what I really don't like. I've had the valve body out 2 more times since and still no luck. If you shift manually it will chirp the tires. but big f'ing deal. that cost me 250 bucks, what a waste. Also when I'm getting on it while going around a corner and it shifts, the tires chirp and the rear end of the truck totally kicks out. I mean all at once not like doing a burn out on a grade- I'm talking 3 feet sideways in a split second. That took some getting used to. no more hot rodding in corners in guess.
I could have bought some roller rockers with that money.
Some poeple like the kits but that is my experience

Hey Ray, if you're set on supercharging it, which it sounds like you are, go for the Paxton. You'll pay a lil more than some of the other kits, but it's hands down the best setup out there, no fuel issues, no tuning issues. I strongly suggest upgrading your headgaskets. I blew out the stock ones and replaced them with cometics and MP head bolts, no problems since. The Paxton setup comes set to run 8lbs, you can take the restrictor out of the intake and get 10lbs with the stock pulley, that's what I'm running. I like the ATI intercooled setup but there's guys having fuel issues with that setup. The only kits I haven't heard having tuning/fuel issues are Paxton and Vortech.

Thanks for the info. I've got the Transgo sitting in the garage. Been putiing it off until spring- now I may not install it. I don't like the "solder" concept and now I'm looking into the Msaine vb.....Heard so many goo/bad things with the Transgo....

It seems that most supercharger kits come with a less than ideal FMUs… I think that it all comes down to your own ability to tune it. Or you just blow up your motor from ether: not enough fuel, too much boost or too much timing…

I should be getting ATI system shortly, so I should be able to comment on it farther.
