Subject: V6 Running like crap... IP: Logged
Message: Hey all,
I have a 97 3.9 Dak. I have put a new timing chain and tensioner on it and water pump, I have also put on a Highflow 3" cat and Ravin 3" to 2-2.5" outlet exhaust on it and a K&N drop in filter. I have replaced the o2 sensor.
The truck is running rich and pinging with cheap gas which it never did before, I have tried reseting the computer by leaving the Pos battery terminal unhooked for an hour and by unhooking the battery and turning the key to the start position for a minute. None of these helped my problem.
The truck is now starting to act up and not keep running after I start it. I try to start it and it fires and dies right away, I have to keep my foot on the gas to start it and keep it going for about a minute of driving then it is ok. It does it when it is hot or cold.
Any suggestions on any of this is greatly appreciated. I am dying here...
Thanks all.

Message: That's your answer to just about everything. There are other components that may have failed and other sources for air leaks before the guy rips his intake off just to find it might be OK.
Why don't you get a clue?

Message: only thing that gets me is that you said non of the problems happened before the timing chain install.... kinda wondering if you bumped something out of timing. But of course thats a lot more work than checking a manifold leak.

Message: I am having basically the same problem with my V8. And this is after I put on new headers, y-pipe, and carsound cat. How do you check/fix the fuel injector sync. Also, I checked my plugs (Autolite 3923) and 5 of the tips were loose. I tightened them but could this have done any damage to the plugs? Another idea I had was that something may have happend with the o2 sensors when I had the new y-pipe made? I am really just guessing now cause I havn't been able to figure it out and its really starting to suck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Message: Unless the distributor was moved, Sync should be Ok. To check it you need a scan tool. Dealer will cost you about $75.00 just to check. I bought a Snap-0n ($$$$$) to play with. The best thing is the local Vocational School. I had a friend there check mine and also scope the injectors. Which lead me to change to FMS injectors. They have some good diagnostic toys. Check them out. Good luck.
