Message: Generally speaking, I think shorties are better for higher rpm power. Has something to do with the amount of time that it takes a pressure wave to go from the exhaust port to the y-pipe and be reflected back to the port. At higher rpm's there is less time for this to occur so you want a shorter distance to the y-pipe.

Message: ABOUT THE HEADERS
Shorties are for low end torque and long tube are for increased torque at the top end.
Thats why shorties will pass emisions and be civil on the street, and thats why you put long tube on a drag machine so you can keep the revs up throughout. Mopar headers for your truck are the best you can get, they are made by Doug Thorly Headers. Extremely high quality and lifetime guaranty. Prices seem high, but the have new y pipes right back to the cat (almost). And the new y-pipe is 2 1/2" = lotta powa
that my 2cents on headers, have fun

Message: Tri-Y headers, first proposed by Thorley, were successful because the tubes were configured such that exhaust pulses left each bank of cylinders creating an almost constant vacuum, which helped to "pull" exhaust pulses out and away. Of necessity, the Ys have to be placed strategically for exhaust scavaging to occur, and occur in the right firing order sequence. "Shorties" do not offer this scavaging effect and are therefore less effective but still better than OEM. Tube size, to some extent, determine where highest HP and TQ happen, because the exhaust pulse travels faster in a smaller tube than a large one.
All this technology means that the driver has to choose his equipment according to his own application. Sorry, there's no easy answer here.
I had the factory Mopar headers. They made HP and TQ at very high RPM where my truck does not often operate. They were traded for a set of ceramic coated shorties and suit my needs just fine.

Message: The Tri-Y Mopar headers are tuned to run in the rpm range that matches a mostly stock engine. The peak increase will be in the 3200-3600 range. The idea was to keep the low end torque up.They are a very old design in theory and are rarely seen anymore. They make very little if any more power than the shorties. It fact if JBA dyno sheets are correct they make more than the Mopar headers. If you want headers that will give you some bang for the buck go with a true 4 into 1 design or a stepped tube race header.Besides for the price of the Mopar headers you could do the entire exhaust system on your truck.
