Subject: Tire size and Gears IP: Logged
Message: I currently have 3.55 gears and would like to swap them out for 4.10's. But first I would like to actually feel what 4.10's will do for me. What size tire do I need to put onto the back to make my rear comperable to a 4.10. Thanks.

Message: I went to Randys ring & pinion calculator.
Based on: 3.55 gears, 255/55/17 tires (28"height)
I came up with a new tire height of 24.2" x 3.55 gears to equal 4.10 x 255/55/17 (28"height) tires.

Message: I have a 2000, 4.7, automatic - I run 28" tires. 3 weeks ago I went from 3.55's to 4.10's. The 4.10's are the gears these trucks should have been set up with at the factory. Dollar for dollar, this gear swap is the best upgrade you can give a "3.55 truck". At 65 I am at 2500 RPM on the tack in OD. The 4.7 makes its power high in the RPM band. You get a MAJOR infusion of pulling power with the 4.10's vs the 3.55's
I will likely go to a 29.5" tire when I need new tires. The 1 1/2" diferrence in tire diameter will give me an effective gear ratio of about 3.90. If you are going to run 32's or larger, 4.56's would be better. I personally don't care for that tall a tire on these trucks and would recommend you stay at 28" to 30" with the 4.10's. I realize some here will disagree with this view, but excessively tall trucks on a relatively narrow trackwidth is not the most driveable vehicle under many conditions - but, they do look good.
