Subject: MY01 Chain tensioner IP: Logged
Message: My engine didn't have any tensioner on it, does Dodge no longer use them on there 5.9L? If not could I buy one and install it with a new chain? I suspect my chain is making noise.

Message: I thought they only used the tensioner on the 3.9's.

Message: replace the timing chain then. dodges like to stretch and that makes them loose.

Message: You don't need the tensioner if you use a good, high quality, true double-roller timing chain. In fact, the tensioner may not fit with a good chain. IMHO, I'd rather get a good chain and run the thrust plate instead of the tensioner.

Message: b1llyw,
That's exactly what I was thinking, I rather have the double roller chain rather than a weak mopar stock chain with a tensioner.
Any suggestions on what type of chain and where to get one? How much do they run $50?

Message: Budget $100 for a good chain. JP Performance is a nice sturdy chain that KRC sells - Marty only gets $85 for them which is a good deal. I put a Rollmaster (same as JP) for $100 on the 408 going in my '95 only because Marty was out of the JP chains when I needed one. Hughes Engines supposedly has some decent chains also.

Message: Just ordered a JP DB Roller from KRC, I hope that helps the noise. I was told that a fast ramp rate from a cam could cause lots of noise. Does anyone know if the KRC206/ CompCam 262HR-12 has a fast ramp rate?
This is what I was told, sounds correct to me, saying if my cam has this fast rate. Plus my 2.02 R/T heads with strong springs could of taken it's toll on my stock chain.
"PS, depending on the ramp rate on that cam, it may be "normal" noise. Sometimes to get them to idle worth a crap (bigger cams) they grind in really steep ramps, and the valves open and close fast and hard....."
What do you gay & gals think?
