Subject: More Power for 5.2L IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 4X4 with a 5.2L. I already have a cat back exhaust, Mopar performance PCM, and 4-10 gears w/32" tires. The question is: I am planning on putting 35" tires and 4:56 gears, But I feel with the larger tires I will loss too much low/mid power to pull my travel trailor. I want to add a throttle body, Cam, MPI, and heads. Please recomend a good combo to increase power in all ranges.

Message: Not what you want to hear, but the best way to increase power in all ranges is an increase in displacement. Good luck !

1.7 RR's would be easier to install than a Cam and should gain you 20-25 HP from 2500+ rpm

Message: Mopar headers make a good increase in torque. But I agree with Kowalski. A 5.9L with the headers and performance computer would be the plan.

Message: You got it Chris. Notice what kind of car they wrecked in the end ? Not the Challenger, they swapped in a Camaro to hit the dozers. Gotta love it !

Message: Hey Jamesb
I'm running 32 inch tires and I was thinking about some better gears...I have the stock 3:55
Can you tell me what your RPM level is at 70mph with those 4:56 gears and 32 inch tires ? I'd really appreciate it.
thanks,

Message: I run about 2100 RPMs @ 70 MPH with 32" and 4:10 gears. when I first put the 32" tires on my truck I still had the original 3:55 gears. My truck barely had the power to tow anything 5000+ pounds. With the 4:10 gears I can easly tow a 8000# trailor thu the hills of Kerville. So 99dakota5.2L4X4, if you plan on keeping 32" tires on your truck go with the 4:10 gears. You will have plenty off power. 4:56 would be too much for 32" tires.

Message: Where are you guys getting the 4:10 gears for the gen III dakotas?
I have done some checking and was told they don't make them for the front diff.
JamesB, If you are buying 4:46 gears for your 4x4 and you have a 9 1/4 rear end, I would be interested in buying your 4:10 gears.

Message: You can get the parts from www.4wheelparts.com. If you can not find a 4:10 for the front differential, go with a 4:09 or 4:11. That is what I have done, and it has not caused any problems. I have been driving on these gears for about 40,000 miles. By the way, be carefull and check exactly what kind of diff you have in the front. It should be either a Dana 35 or 44(mine was). 4wheelpart has had everthing I have needed.

Message: wow.. so you are running at 2100 with 4:10 and 32 inch tires. My RPMs run just under 2000 at 70mph with 32 tires and 3:55. My truck is slugish though especially going up hills the overdrive constantly switches back and forth.
Those 4:10 sounds like the best combination with 32s. So with 33 do you think 4:56 would be too much? I want to buy some 33s this summer.

Message: 99Dak5.2L4x4,
32s/4.10 in OD at 70mph=2079rpms
32s/4.56 in OD at 70mph=2312rpms
only a difference of 233rpms
33s/4.56 in OD at 70mph=2242rpms
compared to
32s/3.55 OD off at 70mph=about 2675rpms
I know what you me about the trans, thats why mainly leave the OD off. The OD gear of .69:1 in the auto really cuts the difference in rpms between the rear gears allowing you to gain the off the line of the steeper set.
