Subject: Can this be done??? IP: Logged
Message: OK I hope you guys can help me on this one or at least give me some ideas. I have a 91 Regular Cab Dakota with the pre mag 318 TBI with the A500 and 3.55 suregrip. What i was wondering is What needs to be done to get this to run 12's. I estimate now that it runs high 14's to mid 15's My goal is to make a a normally aspirated (No juice or forced induction) daily/weekend driver. If possible i would like to keep it a 318 but I have also thought about do a crate motor swap and putting the 360/380 in it or finding a 440 and rubuilding it to be a street/stip motor. I plan on changing the gears to 4.10 and possibly changing the trans to a 727 but am not sure about that. I ahve also considered haveing the engine bored .030 over and bult with a 4" crank so it would be a 390 stroker but am concerned about the drivability of this motor and its out put. I am planning on making any engine that is put in it carberated because i dont have to worry about emmisions where i am at. I would like to do this in the future. Thanks for your help

Message: if you are going to do the complete motot swap go for the 440... the 360 crate motor is not going to get you any where near the #'s you want... plus there have been some big quality control problems with it... you could build a 408 from a 360 block, with higher compression you could get up around 500hp and similar torque... I would definately get the tranny rebuilt by someone good ... www.apsprecision.com ... Wayne has a lot of experience and will answer all your ?'s...

Message: But doesnt the stroker make its power at low RPM. I alsways thought you wanted something with more hp on the high endthen on the low end.
The reason I asked about the 360 is te new mopar muscle has a dyno test in itand it doesnt make the 380hp they say it does it ended up making 409hp and the tq curve i pretty flat and puts out the most around 2500rpm. Thanks

Message: Hot Rod mag got a Duster into the mid 12's with a premag crate engine, it had 4.10's also but other than that nothing special.
Just go figure what a 380+ engine would do........the premag crate only got up to 360hp if I am correct.
Btw, your more like 16 qt right now. The TBI Mopar was the saddest of all of em.
Rip the TBI off, find the guys who have modded their Shelby's. Some of em have turned em into very respectable rides.

Message: it is thought that b/c of the longer stroke that stroker motors usually make big Torque down low, but the bigger ci will make up for the power up top... take a look at the motor Scott Q. is running... Built, blueprinted, 408, supercharged... pushing 670hp at the rear wheels... then he also has a 100hp shot. If you build a stroker with good parts... and go light weight where you can.. aka.. Ross pistons, lighter rods, billet crank... you get the idea... the lighter weight will easily offset the slow reving tendencies of the longer stroke... 1 gram traveling 80 fps makes a huge difference...

Message: I have tought about converting my to a 2bbl or 4bbl intake and carb to see if I might make some more hp and better mpg The above post is what i want to do to it when finaces permit but i figured i would get a list put together of parts hat i wuld reqire and buy them a little at a time.
I do have the TBI unit off of a 360 with 318 injectors and that improved throttle response alot It also cut some time off of the 0-60. I also have the plastic cover on the intake behing the grill removed to make it more like a ram air/cold air intake that also helped. I have no problem beaking loose my 235/75/r15 with the 3.55 sure grip so im petty sure im over 200hp. I have heard ratings for this motor from 170-220hp but nobody seems to know for sure. I have looked in a CHilton book for my year and they claim 220hp if anybody has any ideas what it is for sure that would be great Thanks

Message: Forgot to tell you that theres a kit out to stroke a 318, comes out to 390 and it has the lightest recip. mass of all the sb Mopars.
Ask for "Dodgeboy" if you want more info, him and a friend just finished one.
I didnt say in my first reply but I think you could just get into the 12's with a 318, it will make it a bit much to drive as a daily driver but it could happen with good heads like Edelbrocks 2.02's, decent intake like a M1 single plane, a good cam but there in lies a bit of a problem....you will have to go away from your stock roller configuration for an old school hyd or flat tappet unless you have deep pockets and can get a race roller setup with guides, girdles and all.
Get KB's Hyper. pistons and have the whole assembly ballanced and blueprinted.
Set all your tollerences up loose unless you think you may go forced or injected (n2o).
Thats a general description of a few decent Mopar engines I have built.

Message: Holy crap!!! if the hp #'s were even close to that they wouldnt have had any need to redesign the 318 so heavly as they did to get the Magnums.
The mag 318 only made 225.
Last I read the TBI 318 only made 150-160 hp and thats why a Dak 3.9 (175hp) mag had better times than the 318 TBI dak.
Your only breaking the tires loose because it is a V8 and has some tq, I bet it feels like someone threw out a 2 ton boat anchor at about 60'.
I know the Shelby I drove and almost bought did. Thats the lose of hp right there, you have one of the lowest performing small block Mopars ever produced.
Its an old old school designed V8 trying to stay emissions legal and Mopar didnt do a very good job. Dont get depressed just yet thought because you dont have to worry about over priced PCM issues that us mag'ers have to.
Thats why I almost bought one just to be able to throw some old scholl parts on it and make it go!!
Most all the kits I have seen at Hughes and all the others advertised on here are for mag engines, you'll need one for pre 93 called the LA.
Check Mopar Performance directly and then maybe Mancini or Koller.
