Ok, ok, ok! WHAT is the best Cold Air Intake System out there for the '02 5.9L??? I have seen prices from $99 all the way to $270!! They all seem to look the same in the pictures, so whats the deal??? I like K&N, they have been doing this for quite some time now, but are they turning into Sony??? Just paying mostly for the name? As you can probably tell, I am getting a bit frustrated at this point and would LOVE some help from ya. I am interested in 2 things: Most power and BEST fuel economy. The 5.9L is a thirsty beast and I would love to extend the economy AND improve performance. ( I know, keep my foot out of it! ) But that aint no fun. Thanks in advance and I am starting starting my trip down modification lane...

Unlike some other performance part categories, I don't think there is a hands-down "best over all the rest" air intake system.

First of all, the biggest benefit you're going to see is from the general idea of removing the restrictive factory exhaust and replacing it with something that flows better. This will increase horsepower, and a more efficient engine will help increase gas mileage (as long as you can keep your foot out of the newfound power).

Some key factors to think of when selecting an air intake:

1. Size of the air filter/tube. If you're driving a V8 truck, those tiny little 4" filters you see on little ricemobiles just can't keep up with the air flow. 6"-9" filters are better for bigger engines, and bigger tubes move more air.

2. Location of the air filter. If the filter is sitting smack dab in the middle of the engine bay unprotected, you're drawing in the stagnant, hot engine bay air which partially negates the benefits of having an air intake system. Air intakes that are protected by a heat shield and/or draw their air in from the front-right corner or fender are going to be cooler, and cooler air is denser air, resulting in more power.

3. Materials/Appearance. Homebrew PVC kits work well, but they look like MacGyver's nightmares imho. Plastic won't absorb heat as much but is prone to distortion or cracking (K&N's FIPKs are notorious for cracking very often, although they will replace them under warranty when it happens). Unprotected/Chrome metal tubes look much nicer but can run hotter. Ceramichrome-coated tubes look nice and don't absorb as much heat.

You're gonna want the K&N.It is the best mainly for one reason, it gets rid of the factory airhat which may I add is very restrictive.That's why the prices are so high.Look at the price on an airhat by itself.Although not the best looking, its more than likely the best for performance.
