Subject: Air Filter/Mod Article- Part II IP: Logged
Message: Here is my final answer to the air filter mod for my 92 Dak. http://www.flipchip.net/dodge/airfilter_conundrum_part2.htm I posted this in the attempt to help my Gen I & II bretheren keep their sanity.
Now I can move on to less important but far more dangerous things, like rearranging my sock drawer!

Message: Hey Kirk,
Did it help any? I've been planning on doing the same thing but, haven't had the time. Can you tell me how long was the straight tube? And I was also wondering if you've had any problems with the whole set-up sagging and pulling the air hat away from the Throttle Body.

Message: Hi Kris,
So far I would say yes it helps, also it has the old open throttle noise that my 73 Chevelle had. (love it) I have had do problems with the pipe dropping off since the filter rests on the fenderwell. There is no way that thing is going anywhere. The straight tube is about 8".

Message: I do, about 3-4" max. Just enough to make the connection. that is why you cant see it in the pic. I did forget to mention that the new air hat valve breather tube will need to be longer. Get some black 5/8 hose. 2ft. is more than enough. That and a hose clamp for the air hat side.

Message: Kirk, looks good. I left the hose off the valve cover breather when I had my old 14x3 on there. Do you think there will be any problems just capping off that hole with some RTV? Did you use PVC glue (the orange stuff)? I have some leftover from another project, that stuff sets up like concrete!

Message: Yes, you can also build yourself a "Home Brew" intake for your 5.2L from parts found at Home Depot. (Total cost is right about $40-$45 w/K&N Filter from your local speedshop or Summit Racing.)

Message: Yep, went to Ace Hardware and Home Depot, Ace didn't have any black tubing. So I settled for the white, I can always paint it. Then went to the Dodge Dealer to order an air hat, $70.00 after tax, and I've always wanted one anyways. Soon I'll order the K&N from summit. Yep, getting rid of the summertime heat blues.

Message: Kris, I have the summer time heat blues also. Get 3" PVC like Kirk had on his website. I found an airhat for $30 from a guy in Indiana. Have not received it yet, probably will be a week or two. Jegs sells a cone filter p/n 599-RE-0810, is 9" long, 6 inches at the widest, 4-5/8" at the smallest with a 3" inlet, costs 46.99. That should work also. Summit does not have a picture of the RE-0920

Message: Well, I checked their site. They have changed it since I've last been there, the only thing I could find was
http://www.knfilters.com/vent.htm
The only thing they say is that the crankcase breathers should not be used on "emission controled" vehicles. And that "the crankcase breathers are only to be used on race motors".
It used to say (I know this because I've wanted to do the same thing for a long time but this stopped me) that this would some how screw up a computer controlled vehicle and cause engine damage. But, I couldn't find this quote since they updated the website. Why don't you email them to find out why they could cause engine damage? Find out cause I still want to put one on.

The gas milage monitor on my overhead display has been going crazy.. From 42 mpg down to 6 mpg. Don't know how to read it yet, but first apperances are that the gas milage has gone up. I will know better when I run from a full tank of gas.

Message: Hey Kirk,
Did you remove the restricter plate behind the grill? I finally got mine done, the first day it was in the pvc's started to loosen up. Didn't happen today though. My previous intakes were the 14"x3", before that I had the stock intake with the restricter plate off and a 3" Aluminum pipe in the intake tube, now this set-up. I'm not really sure which set-up I like the best though.

Message: All right kirk, this time I caught the intake just as it started to seperate. So instead of putting the old 14"x3" back in I decided to put my original intake back in. Whoa! I forgot how well this system did in the summer! I was doing about 30mph and stomped on it, it barked the tires as it downshifted. It could never do that with the 14" or the Gen II set-up. And it was about 80 degrees outside. Give this a try, I can't decide which one I like the most. First take your original airduct hose and put a 3" straight air ducting metal tube in side of it. Cut open the turn in the hose and put a 90 degree air ducting elbow in there. Seal it all up with tape. Remove the restricter plate, and install the original filter housing. I can't really decide which one makes more power, they both have they're good days and bad days. And having three intakes to choose from I'm getting one hell of a headache!

Message: Speaking of air filters, which k&n is a direct replacement of the factory one? I once had a 89 Ford taurus 3.8v6 at a track, it ran 17.25 consistently, put a k&n on it and it went to 16.75. Of course I put a conical filter on it, and the factory air-silencer was only about an inch in diameter, but still, only a k&n filter and .5s.. I could not believe it.
