Would I benefit from a taller gear like a 4.56 w/ all the mods I currently have? I know it'll help me off the line w/ the bog till the cam wakes up but I'm worried if it'll change my top end even though I have the mods to take care of the top end.

I have heard from a couple of guys that have the gears that it actually improves top end. 120+ is no problem with them. Your rpms will be 200-300 higher on the highway, and your mpg will improve in the city. Other then serious traction issues they make the truck perform better, like night and day.

I'm interested in a group buy. I know you can get them from John Mercedes for around $150-200 I think.

To get a better idea of the RPM@ certain speeds,
assuming a 5 speed w/ 29" tall tires (stock 16"), rounded to the nearest 100RPM

3.55 (base assumption):
70 2200RPM
115 3500RPM

3.92:
70 2400RPM
115 3900RPM

4.11:
70 2500RPM
115 4100RPM

4.56:
70 2800RPM
115 4500RPM

4.56 may be pushing it unless you have larger diameter tires, 4.11 seems about right

The deeper gears help acceleration throughout the rpm range. They will lower the top speed because it'll reach the rev limiter at a lower speed. You will get to that speed quicker. Depending on your trans, tire size and peak hp/redline will determine the best gear ratio in a drag racing stand point.

Using the gear calculator at www.4lo.com with 29" tires in 3rd gear(auto)/4th(manual) going through the lights at 6000rpms will let you run 113.6mph. With 27" tires(255/50/15) will run 105.7mph through the 1/4 mile.

Would changing 3.55 to a 3.92 or 4.11 be good on my truck? what exactly does it doing changing the gears like that, and what kind of work is it to do it. What would i benifit from it and what would i regret (if any)?? thanks you guys

A lower gear will improve your acceleration, city mpg, and make it a bit more fun around town. The downside is a little higher rpms and lower highway mpg.

Yes you would notice a night and day change in the way your truck drives.

Those revs seem low to me. With my 2000 and 3.92's I rev at 3000 RPM at 85MPH in 5th with the 275/60/15's.

I would consider 4.10's though...

Since you all are planning on changing your gears out. Be sure to put in some nice synthetic gear lube (do this after you use regular lube for the first 500 miles) like Redline. www.myoilshop.com has the best prices, shipping, and best service than any other Redline dealer I know of.

I'm sure the 4.10 gears are very similiar in price to the 4.56 gears (but I wouldn't go with the 4.10 gears unless you have 3.55 now). I just asked him to give us a price on v-8 and v-6 gears along with everything else we need. I think you need to change out some bearings and that comes in a kit in addition to the gears.

I'm in Houston, not sure of the place your talking about. But there is another guy here that has the 4.56 gears, I will ask him.

Hey Lab Rat,

Yeah I've bought a few parts off them. I've heard Earnie knows what he's talkin about but I didn't know if they'd done gears on an R/T before so thats why ET never crossed my mind. I'm sure there's alot of shops here in Dallas that could do quality work but I'd never know who to start w/. But since you mentioned ET I'll give em a call!

BTW...where you live at?

Oh, and, I'm out in Wylie (east of Plano, north of Garland). Had all we could take of Plano a few years ago...

Got a little more info:

You need, ring gear, pinion gear, install kit which should included front and rear pinion bearings, carrier bearing, shims, crush sleve, paint with brush to find pinion depth.

So the kit will have everything we need besides fluid of course.

How come you would only go to the 4.10 if you have a 3.55 right now? why not the 4.56, is that too much of a difference. I only have one tire fire right now, is that ok with a 4.10? or does it change that? sorry for the dumb questions.
