Subject: Fuel Injector Cleaner???
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently noticed that im only getting around 11.7 to 12.8 MPG mixed highway/round town driving which is down from what i used to get since i first bought the truck in July which was 15.2 to 16.8. My truck only has 36k miles on it and was wondering if i should use any fuel injector cleaner??.... I used Outlaw in my old truck a while ago and i gained 50 more miles per fill up and was thinking of using that but felt i SHOULD come here to get everyones opinions. If i should use some Injector Cleaner/Fuel system cleaner, which do u guys prefer???

Thanks In Advance

I say buy the good stuff, the stuff that is like $8-9 per bottle. That'll do it. The fuel injector cleaners are good for maintenence but for this bigger stuff you need the fuel system cleaner... No problems yet on my new truck but my 'ol '88 used to get like that and need the $9 stuff about every 10k miles...

Fuel injector cleaner is a good idea now and then. I just toss in a bottle of Techron every time I get6 my oil changed, and I use only Chevron gas...long story that I'll leave a lot of details out of but a mechanic recommended techron and chevron gas after I got sludge built up on the intake valves of a previous car...never had a problem with buildup since then on any other vehicle I've owned.

For the gas mileage dropping, I'd check two simple things. Spark plugs: make sure they are in good condition and gapped correctly...the gap tends to grow with mileage and that will kill gas mileage. Also check the gas pump next time you fill up: a LOT of places use oxygenated gas (or some other reformulation) from about October through March, depending on where you're at. In my experience, the winter blends cause a noticeable mileage drop as compared to the summer blends. If there's not a sticker on the pump, ask the guy who works there...you might get lucky and find someone who knows something about the gas coming out of the pumps.

Ah, all the stuff thats available at autoparts stores is nice, but the REAL way to clean fuel injectors is by ultrasonically cleaning them.
Usually runs about $25 per injector. Comes with a flow readout for each injector.
If you want the best "pour in" solution, Redline FI cleaner is the BEST. Period.
And youre NOT going to pickup 50miles per tank with ANY additive. (so lets put that BS to rest right now)
You know picking up a good book on FI and how it works will really open your eyes. You will soon realize that most autoparts stores are nothing more than lucrative ventures preying on your (and others ignorance)

Thanks everyone for your imput. Looks like i will be buying the Techron formula up tomorrow. Hopefully it will help out. And as for my plugs, i changed over to the Autolite 3923s about 2 months ago and were gapped at what the sticker under the hood says... think it said .40.

Ill check my plugs before i put in the injector cleaner just to make sure.

TurboGuy, believe me or not, but i did get 50 more miles per gallon.

Find me a better Fuel Additive than the "AMSOIL
P.I." and I will drink it !

There "Power Foam" is the best throttle plate and
carburetor cleaner too!

AMSOIL P.I. $7.55 per bottle and it treats 160
gallons.

AMSOIL Power Foam about $4.50 per can I think.

I talked to my mechanic whom I trust and he said any chevy dealer sells a super concentrated fuel injector cleaner for about 18 bucks. He told me that the stuff works excellent. He also told me to use the b12 chemtool in the metal can once a month. He used to be an f-16 engine mechanic and says b12 chemtool was used to clean the deposits of the jet engine parts.

Just my two cents
