Subject: Headers Question IP: Logged
Message: OK. So I have done plenty to the looks of my dakota, Now I want to make it a little more powerfull. I am currently thinking about installing headers on my 98 3.9l.
I did some shopping around on the net & found some prices. But before I actualy waste my $$, has anybody installed headers before, how hard was it, how long did it take, or if you did it the lazy way and took it to a shop, how much did it cost.
Any suggestions, Holla.
Ben

Message: 1. headers aren;t gonan be all to effective till
you finish out your exhuast. so plan on buying a
highflow muffler and the like.
2. get a buddy and prepare to do about 4-5 hours
of work. mabye less depending on how good you are
with tools.
took me and a buddy 5 hours to do but thats
counting about 45 min for lunch and a short trip
to the store to get silicone. the process is not
hard. and theres plenty of room to work with the
3.9. it is a two person job though. you could do
it alone but it'll take you longer. jsut make sure
you have everything BEFORE you get started. so
much easier that way. how many miles you got on
her? the only thing you really have to be careful
about is taking out the old bolts. don't wanna
break them.
you'll add some hp with the headers but it will
take a lil away from your low end torque. you can
pick that back up with other mids. she'll pick up
nice at higher speeds. thats bout all i can think
of now. got anymore questions let me know.

Message: I just installed headers on my 2002 3.9. I've also got a Magnaflow muffler on it, and so far I can tell absolutely NO difference from stock. It's still a dog. I've also got 1.7 roller rockers, an intake and an F&B throttle body waiting in the wings, so I'm hoping that those will wake it up a little. I wish I'd gotten a V8.
I installed the headers all by myself, and it was no big deal. Just be patient, and soak down the exhaust parts with Kroil or WD-40 or something, and be very careful with them when taking them out...twist slowly and don't jerk on them. My truck was new, so the bolts came out easy. To get the manifold studs out, use 2 nuts...1 nut as a jam nut, and back them out that way.

Message: Pistolero: what kinds truck do you have. cause with the rest of the mods you got waiting that should wake up your truck.
and yeah just be patient. it takes time. invest in some liquid wrench.

Message: Thanks for you help Greg.
I currently have a single Flowmaster 40 series... Is it necessary to have a seperate exhaust for the other header?
As soon as I get done paying off these rims, i'm gonna get some of this started.

Message: Thanks for the encouragement, Greg. My truck's a RC Sport+. I'd really like to throw in a 4.10 gear and see what that'd do with the automatic, but that'll have to wait awhile. I'm a bit leery of having to take it back to the dealer to get the speedo calibration reset...assuming that I could afford to do the swap, anyway. I may play with the TV cable a bit to see if I can delay the shifts by another 1000rpm or so.
Benzdak...don't do a dual exhaust on a V6. Single in/single out is fine, or you could do a single in to split dual out. The V6 can't breathe enough to support true duals. Don't go any larger than a 2.5" pipe, either.

Message: no you don;t have to have a seperate exhuast. if
you run true duals you'll lose too mcuh back
pressure and that mean loss of tourque. so just
one is good. so you'll notice a better pull at
higher speeds and i noticed increased mileage. so
hopefully you'll see that too
Pistolero: the newer trucks speedometer is read by
wheel speed not gear speed so an upgrade in gears
you should be fine (thats what i hear from the
people on this board) i'm gonna upgrade mine to
the 3.90 in my 5spd. gears aren;t too much. get a
set of gears and the install kit for under 400 and
then check your local shops. probly somewhere
areound 200 for install. so $600. in the long run
its not too bad. www.ring-pinion.com good prices
and know their stuff. good luck to both of you.
