 Subject: H.O. Cam Wedge Tool?

I'm putting the cams in tomorrow and don't have the wedge tool. I remember some of you that installed the cams saying you built one out of wood. Does anyone still have the specs for the home made wooden tool? Or what other ideas could I use instead of the actual wedge tool? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

I didn't have the wedge tool either, but managed.
You can see pictures of what I did to over come this at This Web Page. Now there was several people that went uh, oh my god and such. I managed, the cam gear never dropped down 1 mm the way i did it and the tensioner never ratched out at all. Now if you do it this way, beware that if the tensioner does ratchet out, that the whole front of the motor has to be taken apart to retract it. I used wire ties around the chain and cam gear to hold it secure along with 2 screw drivers.
If you can get the tool from your local dodge dealer then do if you can carve one then do if not then there is always the redneck way.

I also done only one side at a time. starting with the passenger side and moving to the driver side. I completely did each side cover removal, cam removal, cam replacement, torqueing and cover replacement before changing sides to limit the chance of chain movement.

I'm thinking the wedge tool from the local dealership idea is out. That's where I bought my truck and I really don't want them to know what I'm doing. I'd like to fabricate one out of wood if someone could provide the specs for that. I'm a little nervous about doing it the way you did, even though it worked for you. It may just come to that though! I'm assuming you were more than pleased with the outcome of the H.O. Cam install? Thanks Lynn!

Cheapest power yet, I have no dyno's anywhere near here and I'm not driveing like 3 hours to do it. I did notice the way the truck sounded was a lot different, and a seat of the pants low end grunt difference. It p/u a lot down low and it picked up how fast it climed over a 120 mph.
On the a-bahn it took it some time to climb those last 10 mph to 135, now it just kkeeps rising steady from 100 to 135.
The actual deminsions are:
The main dimensions are 5" long, 1 9/16"tall, 9/16" thick.
The angle starts at 1 5/8" from the left end the ends up 15/16" tall on the right side

When I ordered my cams I asked the parts manager to include the wedge in the shipment. He stated the wedge was not necessary and the installation could be done without it.

ive done both tha stock cams and the H.O. cams and u dont have to have the wedge too for tha chain and tensioner. im a tech at a dodge dealer in texas and ive had to do this many times. if u wanna know just email me or put up a post and ill give ya the inside scoop
