You could probably do it yourself, be careful not to stress the pin that locates the sprocket. We zip tied the chain to the sprocket so it couldn't be disturbed. Valve cover R&R is the fun part; watch how they come out to remember how to get them back on.

Those of you who have done the mod.

Afterwards was there a night and day difference, or a suttle difference and at what RPM's does the power seem to have changed the most?

Also, does it leave enough bottom end torque for good towing? That's important to me.

It's more than a subtle difference. It's a total PITA to not spin the wheels on just an ordinary pull out into trafffic. I have a few more mods than just the cams, but still, the effect is VERY noticable. When you get it all put back together and start it up for the first time, it'll probably sound a bit different as well (mine did). It's got a little more lope at idle and up to 1K RPM, and after that, it gets real fun. If our stock ECM's were actually tuned/mapped up to 6K it would be much better...

I would think with the correct cam and PCM, these engines should do upper 6k RPM range.

What's funny is I never paid too close attention to the cam designs. I assumed we had belts, but from what I hear we have chains.

That's good news. I was looking at the front of the engine and figured I would have to really tear out the accesories and cover to get to the belt tensioner. But after reading this post I see that it's a chain and using a zip tie on the cam sprocket enables you to leave the front chain covers in place?

Is there a chain tensioner at all? I would think it would be hydrolic or something.

PLus, what's the deal with the wedge? Is that to hold the sprocket from falling while removing the cam(s) or is it something more?

Yes puppy, there is a chain tensioner; and no, that's not what the wedge is for. Seems the one you called fool might know a little more about this than you, so what should we call you ?

Wow!

Someone was searching the archives!!!

Thanks for digging up my over a year old post.

I did the install about the time of my last post in 02.

You can do it yourself, many posted that they have.

If you're doing it, research it first, read peoples tips, many of which were given to me on this thread, etc.

I think I even posted some extra ones after the install.

Grafite Dak, you asked about low end torque, and towing. The cams alone (HO), will give you MORE low end, than the non HO's.

Kowalski, I'm not sure or remember who you are referring to that I called a fool. Unless you were not serious.
But I am glad to hear these cams are good for towing.
There isn't too much info on modding these engines yet so that's why I asked.

As far as doing the work, that's no problem. Been working on engines and trannies for years. What you describe kind of reminds me of taking the head off of a 22R Toyota. i.e. there was a trick to holding up the chain and sprocket while the head was off and if it slipped, it meant removing all the timing chain covers, etc to fix.

So, what do you do to prevent the tensioner from moving? And does this tensioner ratchet, meaning you have to access it to push the tensioner back in if it moves?

The more info the better because this will most likely be one of my major mods next summer.

Zip ties and the wedge will keep things from moving around on you. Don't force the wedge in too far or you "could" damage the tensioner, IIRC...

Has DC ever published a trq/HP vs RPM chart for the HO Jeep? It would be interesting to see the HO HP/TRQ and compare it to a stock 4.7. How much of the advantage is in the cams and intake vs compression?
