Message: I'd say 17"s for availability of tires. Though if you're gonna go drag racing consider getting some 15"s for the rear and investing in some DOT cheater slicks.

Message: If I remember my physics correctly...
Larger tires (rear) will give you increased speed on top end but decreased torque on take off....
Something to consider.

Message: wrong answer Tim, 15's are what u want for drag. with the dot slicks as D.X. stated. apparently physics don't apply. ur 1/4 mi. times will dramatically be decreased with increased tire size.

Message: Tim is correct, you guys are talking apples
and oranges. Rim diameter and tire diameter.
I'm no expert, but I would say you use a tire
diameter that compliments your final drive
ratio, giving you enough torque to get out quick
, But not so much that you spin all the rubber
off. Then you want a rim diameter small
enough to give you decent sidewall, this
allows tire windup which is released as tire
speed increases. With the same outside
diameter and tire compound, a smaller rim
and taller tire sidewall should give you better
1/4's. But, for me, it's all theory since I've never
raced the 1/4.

Message: The reason why I said the larger rim for the street and smaller for the strip is because on the street you're going around corners, smaller sidewalls mean less sidewall flex and roll when going into corners. On the drag strip you are NOT going around corners so more sidewall flex makes for longer (and often wider) contact patches.
You can get same highth tires for both rims.
255/75R15, 255/65R16, and 255/55R17 are all about the same highth and width.
