Subject: Tip Diameter ROBBING HP? IP: Logged
Message: Thinking of replacing my single outlet flow 40 to a duel outlet side sweep with 3 inch exhaust pipes. The guy at a pretty well known performance shop said that the 18 Inch by 3 inch diameter (tips) will rob HP on my RT CC. He recommend I stay with 18 inch by 2 1/2 inch diameter. I don't understand how tip diameter effects performance. Will somebody please explain why? OR is this guy wrong.

Message: Unless your supercharged or have lots of modifications you need to stick with the dual 2.5" pipe exiting the muffler. Otherwise your torque may suffer.
As far as performance goes a single 3" will work the best in most cases, but the looks of a dual is I guess what your going for.
You muffler guy is correct in the most part.

Message: The tip does not make any adverse effect on the performance. It is just for looks. So if you want to put a 3, 4, 5 in tip (like the ricers) go ahead. The guy at the muffler shop does not know what he's talking about. I have a FM 50 series with a 3" tip and 360Intakez. There was a noticeble power gain.
Truck on and good luck...

Message: Still don't understand why or why not. One post somewhat agrees with the mechanic and the other doesn't. Maybe I was too Vague. This is what I want. Cat back 3 inches to a flow forty 2 1/2 outlet pipes with two pipes side sweeping to either side of my truck 18 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. I got 2 quotations one guy says no problem and the other guy says that he doesn't recommend 3 inch tips because it decreases horse power on the 360 engine....I have no modifications other than the flow 40, and a K&N drop in filter.

Message: I'm confused! Does the muffler have 2 1/2" pipes or 3" pipes going to the tips? Dual 3" will be to big and may hurt your torque. The size of the tips (as long as they are not smaller) will not change anything.

Message: Exaust flow is limited by the most restrictive part of the exaust. your tip size wont make a difference if the rest of the exaust is 2 1/2.

Message: it all has to do with exhaust gas flow rates if the pipe is too big the flow slows down as does scavaging, leaving a small charge of burned gasses/exhaust in the cylinder thus robbing you of power. If the pipe is too small too much back pressure developes in the system causing the same thing but for a different reason. so you see the pipes must be of the right size or you loose power.
