Subject: K&N GenII Intake failure#2!!! IP: Logged
Message: Just a heads up to those that have K&N GenII intakes on their trucks. My first intake tube cracked where it sits on the TB(see photo at: http://www.durangoclub.com/ceilidh/attach/KN%20Crack2.jpg ). I contacted K&N and the sent me out a replacement tube under warranty. Well, the second tube failed in the same place after 1 year. I have a third replacement tube but have decided to give up on the K&N GenII after hearing of others with the same problem. I just installed a Intense Performance Stage II to replace it. Because of the location of the cracks, I'm concerned that the two failures went undetected for some unknown length of time. As a result, unfiltered dirty air and water may have gotten into my engine causing damage. ANYONE WITH K&N GENII INTAKES SHOULD EXAMINE THE TUBES CAREFULLY FOR CRACKS!!!!

Message: The new material that they use seems to be a lot heavier than the old crap. I was in the same situation as you, 2 cracked tubes and pissed. I sold it on ebay before the 3rd tube arrived and now I wish I would have kept it. The new plastic is about twice as thick as the material in you picture and the actual weight is significantly more, so I think they finally realized that the plastic was crap.

Message: I was going to sell the third tube but maybe I'll put it on and see how long it lasts.

Message: Smear some JB Weld all the way around the metal ring and up the plastic for 2 inches fixed the problem for me.

Message: I guess I need to check my replacement. I have not had it off in several months. It seemed a lot sturdier than the original.
I did fix my original with JB Weld while waiting for the replacement. It seemed to work well. However, when you spend $250 +/- for an air intake, you expect it to not require a home repair.

Message: Be careful what you fix with; I used that epoxy clay and it crumbled after a few weeks' vibration -- into the TB, of course. The new one they sent is way better than the original; the truck even runs better and sputtered initially, the PCM surprised by the extra flow. Not sure what's up there, but the airhat portion of my original was a lot flatter and this seems to be less restrictive therein. Might have tightened it down too far back then though.
