Subject: Trying to understand Ignition systems IP: Logged
Message: Ok I'm going to show my ignorance here : (
I know lots of you guy's have MSD & Accell Ignition systems, what I don't understand is if the PCM controls the ignition timing, spark and advance characteristics for the engine. And if the ignition timing isn't adjustable how do these items (MSD6A & Accell 300+ etc.) work with our stock systems.
I can see adding a hotter Coil for spark and better wires.
Just looks to me like the PCM would defeat any advantage that these items could add ?

Message: I think they override the factory computer. When the pcm sends out a signal it goes to the aftermarket ignition box which modifies it and sends it back out.

Message: Dan, I'm no expert, but the gist I get is that the add-on ignitions mainly provide multiple discharges (sparks) per ignition cycle, and the spark duration (degrees of piston/rod rotation that the spark lasts) is increased...alledgedly all to more efficiently and completely burn the fuel mixture, which gives more power, efficiency...yadayadayada. Several factors, like load, speed, etc. might influence this.
I read an article the other day that said that even though the aftermarket ignitions might provide several sparks per combustion cycle, they're somewhat lower voltage sparks, since there's not as much time to discharge/recharge for several sparks as there is to provide one big, juicy spark, so they may not be as efficient as claimed. Knowing how capacitive discharge systems work, this makes sense to me, but I don't know enough about MSD or Accel ignitions to say that this is 100% true. I've read a lot of comments from people who've installed aftermarket ignitions and reported 0 performance gain, though, so outside of some better wires and maybe a coil, I doubt that this mod is one I'd spend money on.
