Went out today to my local Advance Auto parts store and did a little shopping. I picked up an off brand name 10" air cleaner and fitted it with a 10"x2" K&N filter (see pics). I get the Reflexxion cowl hood installed a week from tomorrow, so i figured i should get a move on trying to figure out the air intake set-up. So i tinkered around today and the guys at Advance let me try the air cleaner on right there in the parking lot. Turns out the 10"x2" is the perfect fit, even though i would have loved a 14"!! Anyway, since the support beams for the cowl hood are exactly the same as the stock hood (checked it out at the body shop yesterday), i think i am just going to install the air cleaner under the stock hood tomorrow. Impatient? Maybe....I dunno. Just a quick question for those who have removed the stock air box...all you have to do is remove the air hat and the 2 bolts that hold the air box in right? I know about removing the air hat...had it off today. Anyway, installation pics should be up tomorrow.

Yeah, the factory air box only has a couple of fasteners on it. On the passenger side rear, there will be a nut to remove. Inside the air box is a reverse-Torx looking fastener...I think a 10mm socket will fit on it. And then there is a compression fitting on the front of the box.
Simply unsrew the first two fasteners, and then wiggle the box around to get it off of the post in the front.
One thing to look at is to see whether or not the lower filter plate for the no-name filter kit has a crankcase breather hose attachment on it. If it does, you will probably have to buy some 1/2" line because the stock hose likely won't be long enough. If there isn't a fitting, you will probably have to buy one of those on-the-valve-cover breather/filter units.
I ran into this problem when I installed my Shaker hood...the K&N FIPK used has the crankcase breather hose fitting on the bockside of the TB. If you check out the Install page under the Shaker Hood section on my web page, you can pull the Napa part number for the hose I used.

Well, the stock air box came out pretty easily, and the new air filter went on just about as easy. It only took about 45 minutes to get everything done. I must say i think that the open element filter looks awesome.
Halo3, the bottom filter plate did come with a fitting for the breather hose, but i had to move the hose to the front of the filter instead of the back because it kinked up too much in the back. I still may end up going with the valve cover filter instead because the hose is still slightly kinked, although i dont think it will do any harm. Check out the pic under Air Cleaner Installation. The one with the red arrow shows where the breather tube was relocated to, although it is kind of hard to see.
Cant wait until next Monday when the cowl hood goes on. Should be an AWESOME set-up!!
