I see street-driven v8 Dakotas pulling 12sec quarter miles on street tires.
I want my truck in the 10secs and street-legal.
I have a 440 big block sitting waiting to be modified. Go with the 440 or what, twin chargers / turbos? Hemi and viper engines are questionable. The rearend is another story, how does a dakota keep 600+ HPs from spinning out and buying new tires everyday.
What's the cost?

Best way to hook 600 hp in a truck is back half it with a Dana 60 or a 9" Ford , 4-link with coil-overs , 14x32 slicks and a full cage.

anyone can buy a trans am or a stang gt,
throw 5 grand at it, and be in the low 11's
maybe high 10's.
dakota's are another challenge, more weight,
less aerodynamic, and more expensive to
mod.
that trans am sounds MEAN! they are kinda
dumb looking though, I'm more of a truck guy.

I think Todd Patterson has the fastest Dakota with a 7.397 @ 181 MPH 1/4 mile. And that was a Magnum small block with no N2O, blower, or turbo in a 2300 pound 98 Dakota. That was on NHRA's old Pro stock truck class. The IHRA has some fast Dakotas as well.

Speaking of Pro Stock trucks I price checked the carbon fiber hood , fenders , fascia , doors and tailgate - Mopar's list price is just a little over $8,000 , now only if someone would start popping this stuff in fiberglass so it would be a 1/4 of the cost.

The Pro-Stocks did not use a Magnum based engine , when the class was created they were using R3 blocks with W8 heads but later switched to R4 blocks with P5's . The first engines were LA based but the later has very little in common with any production engine. I've seen a few ex-pro stockers showing up with big blocks now since the class was dissolved.

Ron Merx runs a very fast Dakota R/T. Last time at Houston...he ran a 11.7 with the airhat blowing off about 100 yards from the traps. He's very capable of running mid-high 10's.

I had the same thought as Xplikt. If you want the FASTEST, go with a jet engine. Have seen it at show in a semi, camero, and funny cars, but never a Dak.

I got the idea that Todd Patterson's Dakota used a Magnum small block for those times because that's what it said on his homepage. The number I got for his time was on the NHRA records page (it's actually the 3rd quickest pro stock truck run ever the top two are s-10's.) according to the NHRA rule book I think the cubic inch limit when he ran those times was 358. Here is what Todd Patterson's web site said:
"Todd Patterson, driver of the Team Mopar Dodge Dakota, did a commendable job at the Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., two weeks ago. Patterson faced a barrage of NHRA Pro Stock Truck competitors to qualify his Dodge in the #3 position.
“We’ve been working hard on our Magnum® small block combination,” Patterson said. “Between the new camshaft profiles and a host of other improvements, we’re making the power we need to run with the top truck teams. The competition was fierce at the ‘Gators, but we hung in there and made it to the finals. Unfortunately it wasn’t our day – Mark Osborne flat-out beat us.
“I know one thing for sure,” Patterson continued. “The rest of the Pro Stock Truck field has taken notice of how competitive the Dodges are and the threat we’re becoming in this class.”
This was from 4/6/99.
They may well not run a Magnum but just say that fro marketing, but I do beleive the winston cup guys call their motors magnums as well, and they also use the same blocks and cubic inches.

Yeah , I have also noticed that DC calls everything "Magnum" lately - even the Neon engine. The P/S Dakotas use a P5 head that only works on a R4 race block , the heads run about $3,800 a piece for an semi-machined bare casting. The Valve covers are magnesium and run $1,200 a pair and the R4 block is about $4,000 for a rough bored block . There is no off the shelf intake for P5's so a custom sheetmetal intake has to be made. I looked into building one of these then build a car around it but it would cost way too much for something I would use as a street motor.

My truck ran a 13.00@100.69 and the very next run ran a 13.02@108.47 last fall. My truck has a 408 Stroker built by Jon Davis of Hartford City, IN. I have since added a bigger cam and are going to put in 456 gears. As soon as I get some new slicks, I will be at the track and see what times it will turn then. Jon thinks it should turn mid 12's. - Ryan

I am currently building a 400 c.i. big block, 88 Dakota. It is .30 over 12 to 1 pistons, ported & polished heads, racing 727, 3500 stall speed converter, 8 3/4 rear, 4:56 gears, aftermarket axles, Super Stock Mopar springs.
I called Schumacher Performance for thier swap kit, and am waiting for them to get the new Miledon oil pan & pickup to order the swapkit (approx. $800.)
