Message: Just last night I replaced my third cat with a thick straight pipe. (Only for track use and cat checker :) LOL
I even got the pipe and u-bolt for free because their computer was already turned off.
Labor took two hours, I had to move middle brace and tranny bolts, then cut the cat out and replaced it with a 2 to 3 foot pipe. I already had them flange it out some. No wielding needed.
The sound is mean! That third cat restricted so much air that I can say it's almost twice as loud.
Power gains where threw out the band, no loss in low end that's for sure :)
Down side is, 65mph might be too loud on highway. Going 60 or 70mph is acceptable.

Message: Nope 5.9L, I couldn't tell you if removing the cat on a 4.7L would help. I hear you loose torque, but as many cat as I've removed it only helps.

Message: Ok, I know we are talking about the last cat next to the muffler with no 02 sensor but which one are talking about CW? Will removing the last cat cause any computer readings? And lastly has anyone done this on a 4.7? Man that thing is nasty to get to!

Message: Hey, I have a 99 with the 5.2, and i dont know much about my convertor and the O2 sensors. I have dual exhaust on it right now but i'm lookin for something louder, I was thinkin of just cutting it out and putting a pipe in place of it but i have a O2 sesor up by the engine and one right after the cat. will it hurt my truck if i take it out? will my gas mileage go down?

Message: CW said Main cat which is the third cat or the one with no sensors located near the middle of the truck. The other two are the pre-cats that are attached to the exhaust manifolds or headers.
If you have a 2001+ you don't have to worry about any check engine lights with removing the main cat.
The 1998-2000 have one cat, they require a kat box to simulate a cat.
Rowdy, do you have true dual or split? You will need a Kat box if you remove your cat.

Message: Not for the faint at heart, it will be LOUD!
My pre-cat seem to flow very well, before my headers where busting at the seams trying to releave pressure. You could just hear the roar being held back and muffled by the main cat. Holding the main cat up to a light you can just make out the light or try blowing into the cat and it come right back at you.

Message: What about the 97 daks, do i have to have a Kat box? My cousin removed his on a 96 and it sounds good, with no katbox. What will happen if I remove the Cat and dont put in the KatBox? There are no sensors to the third Cat so I dont see what harm it could do. Actually, Im just gonna hollow out the shell and put a pipe throuhg in the middle, so it looks like a Cat.

This should help answer some questions.
Only needed when a O2 sensor is located after a cat.

Message: Texas97, I don't know about the 97s, but my 2002 will actually adjust the air/fuel mixture depending on what it reads from the sensors (4) on the precats. If there isn't a sensor though, it shouldn't be a problem and I have never heard of anyone actually LOOSING power from taking a cat off (AND replacing it with a straight pipe, not just taking it off!). I've been told it makes them A LOT meaner soundin' though. I plan on running true duals on my 4.7L, but it's going to take a decent exhaust shop to do it how I want it and I don't really have that...

Ok this might be stupid on my part but here it goes, ok the Kat Box its just somethin that fools the 02 right, does it take the place of the convertor or do you just put a pipe in and then the kat box, or is it like a free flowing kat?

Message: The reason you need a kat box is to send the correct signal to the PCM. You will keep the O2 sensor unpluged because the sensor will tell the PCM that something is wrong and either your cat is bad or not their. This is where the Kat come into play, it plugs into the wire your O2 sensor did, so the katbox can send the correct voltage or signal saying everything is good and there is no need to a check engine light.
