I have a limited slip rear in my 2002 CC 4.7L 5-speed, it is posi on wet or dry pavement. But when I have one wheel on the pavement and one wheel on ice, only the one on ice will spin.

But, does the wheel on the pavement get any power?

I too have a 4,7 lsd, and would like to know, it seems that it does posi out on dry pavement leaving rubber with my 5 spd.

Does the pavement wheel pull the truck forward whem you're spinning on ice?

the wheel on the pavement did move me forward, barely. Not like you would expect though. Any other time it is posi. if you have one wheel on dirt and one on pavement it is still posi, it is just the ice thing.

Hey all you posi kids.... everytime you line up one tire on ice and the other on pavement to see if the posi unit will pull you forward, you are destroying the clutch paks in the posi unit. Only a locker or a spool will work as well as you are expecting. A posi unit has its limits and spinning one wheel freely whiel trying to get the other to continue pulling is waaaay past those limits. Read the owners manual and you'll see.

you could get a lsd with the 3.55s.....they are more common on the 4x4s, though.

to check if you have a lsd without hurting anything jack the rear axle off the ground and turn one wheel.....if the other wheel spins in the same direction it is a posi....if in the other direction it isn't.

Mine is...

Broke a wheel loose in the rain on a clover-leaf on-ramp and the truck started snapping the rearend back and forth as one wheel broke, then the other grabbed and vice versa. Just like the warning in the manual stated.

Don't ever want to experience that again! Fishtailing is one thing, but a Quad Cab SNAPPING the tail back and forth is CRAZY!

Let off the gas and steered the direction the rear end was snapping in and recovered.

It stopped the woman behind me from tailgating, though!

A "posi" or limited slip has a bias rating .In simpler terms , a raiting that tells you the maximum differance in power going to each wheel. One unit may be 30%-70% another 20%-80% . The bigger the spreed in the two #'s the less user freindly the unit is ,wheel hop in turns and spin outs are the draw backs of a high bias . A low bias will get you stuck in the mud.

I can spin the thing sideways in the rain. But when it comes to spinning it sideways on dry pavement I can't unless the tires are wet. I have 4x4. How hard is it to put a locker in and should I put one in the front? Is it possible? When I had the rearend off my QC I know it was posi because the couldn't get one tire to move without the other one moving. But when I tried to spin it sideways on dry pavement only one tire spun. Not sure what the hell happened?

Lockers are for the drag strip and off road if you drive one on the street it will beat on the driveline and chirp the inside tire in a turn if you open the throttle just a bit.You stated "I know it was posi because the couldn't get one tire to move without the other one moving" , was it in park or in gear? did the other tire spin the same direction? or the oposite direction? P.P. My trac-lock has a bit to much clutch pressure and if condition are right I can get it to hop the inside tire on a turn ,but in a straight line it grabs with two tires even if one is on snow.

I have an R/T with a locking rear end, no matter what surface your on, going sideways, or whatever, if you have a locking rear end, both tires spin, one on ice, one on pavement, the rear end locks up, and spins both if you break them loose. Some of these posts sound like semi posi.

Viper6,
if you have the stock unit than it is not a locking rearend. they are limited slip and are "limited" to the amount of slip....any stock application won't slip but some high horsepower applications can still "slip" a little.
my brother has a 79' Z28 with a Auburn limited slip (one of the best around) but the car still leaves one black mark on dry pavement, but at the track the car takes it sideways the whole way with street radials. that's what 500 hp does to those things.

Why do you people insist on calling the Dodge limited slip rear a "posi"? It is not a posi-traction! That is a General Motors term. Do you all have GM rear axles in your Dodge?

(Gary F) I was thinking the very same thing!!

DC calls it "TRAC-LOC" Its function is simular to the GM "pois-traction" but the TRACLOC uses cones instead of flat clutches.

couldnt even give me a price. Guy at the local
rearend shop quoted $700 installed...what a
scam artist! I should have opted for the $200
option installed from the factory, but was itchin
so bad to buy the dak, I didnt even check for
LS. So if anyone knows of a place to buy
aftermarket LS for cheap (less than $400) or
has one for sale, let me know.

My window sticker on my 2002 Dakota says "3.55 Anti-spin" I leave two marks any where I spin, on any surface, except the one time that one wheel was on ice and one was on pavement, obviously because the excessive strain on the clutches. The wheel on the pavement still chirped a little and pushed me forward, but not like I expected.

Chrysler uses both Chrylser and Dana rear ends depending on which truck you have. And the reason that the LSD slips on ice is simple. The LSD operates on torque. Changes in torque will cause the wheel with most traction to catch. Since on ice there is no resistance, that torque change does not happen, just a lot of spinning. Try pumping the gas real hard or applying slight pressure to the brake if you want that wheel to catch. And from what I hear, the Auburn LSD is better than the Trak Lok for street use, but it does have clutch cones which of course can wear.

mine was an lsd but those things are just junk open rears, sometimes they grip sometimes they dont. I finally bought a Trac-Lok at 33k miles and used my factory 3.55 ring and pinion. No problems and the truck will light up both tires no matter what conditions. Sometimes I even have a tire chirp goin around sharp corners cause it doesn't unlock. Dang good rear end.
