Message: Ive got the same truck. The idle contact button is bolted directly to the side of the carb. It has a plunger, with a wire on the end of it. You need to ground that wire to the block or something. About the air switching valve, I'm not sure, I dont have an air pump. But the computer on mine is mounted on the passenger side inner fender wall. There should be a smaller vacum hose pluged into it. As far as the ASV check your vacum diagram on the truck if you have one. Good luck. By the way what are you setting you timing at?

Message: Thats all right, I HATE Milwaukee also. And cities for that matter. I get dirty looks for having FM 106 stickers on my Dak, FM 106 is THE BEST country station in the state! The city of Waukesha isn't that bad, it's right dead center of Waukesha County. I live one mile from I-94, where it goes under Bluemound (if that rings a bell). Next time your in the area, look me up.

Message: The air switching valve is located on the left bank of the engine, on a bracket (?)near a V belt and valve cover. There is a small vaccuum hose attached to the valve on the left side of it as you face the front of the engine. The valve has one or two large hoses connected to it and its purpose is to turn the flow of compressed air to the catalytic convertor off or on.
Incidentally, there is a TSB out on the timing of some 87 Dakotas. If 7 degrees causes your Dakota to ping while driving, you should adjust it to 3 degrees. Not that it matters on my Dakota. Because I can do all these things and the timing is still all over the place. Just wanders through 3 or four degrees and I don't know why. Even replaced the distributor pickup along with a full tuneup.

Message: The reason your timing is "wandering" is probably your timing belt is probably a little loose or worn. Not that it affects much, but mine does the same.

Message: I don't think that it is a true recall. Just a tech service bulletin sent out to dealerships to help with the common problem. No doubt required by the EPA since it is a timing issue. Strange enough, my Dakota idles fine now that I ditched the Champion plugs and switched to Bosch Platinums. Still can't set the timing very well, but it's not "broke", so i give up trying to fix it and just drive it.

Message: I have an 87... Setting the timing is impossible... I've tried 5 times and it goes back to the same place... i tried setting it at 7.. then it back fired so much i thought it was going to explode... so i finally set it on 14 or 15 and it runs ok for the most part... occasional pinging but nothing major... But it still changes...

Message: Yeah, mines a late 86. I'm not sure about a 1 piece drive shaft. Is that the front or rear? The rear appears to be 1 piece. Is there a recall on that? I just know that I haven't had any trouble with carrier bearings. The most trouble that I have is with the rear end. It's a bit sloppy and the ring/pinion appear to be worn out due to the previous owners towing habit. I'm also not sure of the ratio, but knowing how it leaves stoplights, it has to be a 2.94. Surprised about Mark's paint. It usually comes off in strips down to the primer coat. Mine's just losing the clear coat on the faded red paint. I keep wondering if I can strip off the rest of the clear, scuff it, and shoot another topcoat on it.
Gave up on the timing, put the timing light away, and set it by ear. Runs great and it just failed its emissions test. Strange that it passed two years ago when it was running like crap. Woe is me until I found a temporary way around the test.
The best investment I have made in the truck is a the factory service manual. Haynes is OK, until it tells you to see your qualified technician. See the uatomatic transmission chapter. Then you just want to burn it!

Message: Drunkace, I think I've noticed that. The first time my 87 passed I used a little Guaranteed to Pass (GTP) by Berryman to clean it out and used cheap 87 octane with ethanol. But when it failed I had used GTP and had 93 octane MTBE gas in it with no ethanol. Could be a coincidence, it needs further study. The EPA drives me nuts.
What makes me crazy the most about my 87? Lack of overdrive.

Message: The only reason I used the ethanol gas was because it was advertised to lower emissions.I never used itbecause I hear bad thingsabout it gumming up the carb if left to sit---mind u that this was suggested for my small engine landscape equiptment. I carried that thought over to my cars untill I could not pass the smog test. I wonder what will happen next time.....I'll try the regular gas and see.

Message: Mine diesels a bit too. But it usually happens when I use the lawnmower grade of gasoline coming in at 87 octane with alcohol. This leads me to believe that the rumors about carbon buildup are true. The carbon gradually raises the compression ratio in the chamber and may even form hot spots. You've also got to make sure the throttle blades are closed all the way when you shut it off, too, I think. Try the GTP in your tank. I noticed that it did run a little better when it got cleaned out. Of course, always check the timing....if you can!!!
