Subject: MSD ignition IP: Logged
Message: I installed a MSD 6a ignition & a blaster ss coil this weekend and noticed that my shift point between 2nd & 3rd has dropped to 4500 rpm. It seem a the connections are good.
Any ideas?????

Message: Hey Marc. I dropped a 6a in my 2000 CC RT this weekend as well. So far, Have noticed only a small amount of pinging under heavy throttle. Do you have any? I didn't notice any difference in my shift points or any noticeable change in performance. Did you mount the unit near the engine computer? I mounted mine behind the battery. Maybe noise from the unit is messing with your computer or something...

It seems that neither of you noticed any performance improvements and both of you may have noticed problems. (early shift and pinging)
I had convinced myself to get the MDS 6a ignition. However, it sounds like I might re think it.
Please post comments about performance improvements (or lack therof) after you have worked out bugs, reset computer, etc.

Message: I bought a MSD 6TN for my 5.2 Sport but noticed no difference in power or mpg.
I also know I don't have the correct plug wires and according to SpeedTweaks, you need the tach adapter so it won't interfer with the factory computer.
Have to wait for the $$ before I can continue the upgrade.

Message: I don't think I would write-off the MSD just yet. I am gonna give it some time to see what happens. The ping I was getting is gone; don't know why but I hammered the gas yesterday and she took off with smoke, no ping. The throttle response is definitely there, mpg seems a little better. I think I am gonna regap the plugs to a SMALLER gap to gain better spark saturation (Thanks John) and install my Borg Warner cap and rotor.
I tell you guys this: The K&N FIPK kit I put in my Dak gave the best results for performance and sound, hands down...

Message: Thanks for the advice, I'll reset the computer. Hopefully, it will correct my shifting problem.
One other things, I used this 6a box on my 97 V6 dakota and it worked great. The 6a box gave me little more power and about 3 mpg.

Message: Here is my take on the deal. I only have the butt dyno to go on, which can be decieving. I bought the MSD 6T and Super Conductor wires for my 00 R/T. Kept the OE coil at MSD's recommendation. 1)I saw no increase in power. If there was any, I could not tell it. 2)I saw no increase in MPG. If you have a blower or nitrous, you definately need increased spark energy. If not, I feel the OE ignition is adequate. Remember this also. The OE ignition is inductive. This means you get one long burn of the spark and possibly a couple of short bursts. Best at low RPM and up to about 5-6000. Most street conditions. The MSD is capacitive. This means you get several short spark bursts (up to about 3000 RPM) and then all sparks are very short, and only one per ignition stroke after that. These are great for racing and high power street applications up to 10,000 RPM. There was a guy on moparchat.com a couple months ago who claimed to loose 5 HP on the dyno with the MSD6A compared to the OE ignition. I think I would spend my money on something else.

Message: I installed the Jacobs Ultra system (9mm wires, box, coil). You have to make sure you increase your spark plug gap .15 to allow for the bigger spark.
It works great!

Message: One of the last issues of 4wheel and offroad did a comparison of ignition systems. Pretty crappy article. All they did was say that they were going to try them on an old chevy. They gave it a complete tune-up then dynoed, and then started dynoed with each different system. The article sucked because after they explained the test procedure they said "this is what we saw" All there was was a graph of the dyno results and some contact info on the manufacturer.
What it did show is that compared to stock (tuned up Chevy 350 I think) all of them lost power. The best one was the Crane HI-6. The crane only did good because it peaked higher at like 5000rpm's it made 3 more HP. But all of the systems including Crane had less power than stock under 4000rpm.
I'll put off that mod until I see some real evidence. I'll pump my money into the Group Buys

Message: Hey 4wDakota. I also read that article on the ignitions sytems. It wasnt very convincing at all! But, I dont think they did a good job of working the ignition systems at all. There are too many variables to mention on each system and how they can be different and react under different circumstances. Just putting an ignition system on your truck and doing a dyno is missing the whole boat. That article was poorly done.
There are lot of benefits of an ignition system that they overlooked, didnt state at all, or simply didnt have enough room to mention.

Message: Stoggs I also have a Jacobs ignition. I have the Omni Torquer, which allows up to 6,000 RPM's - perfect for my V6, which has never seen 5,000 RPM's!!! I love this thing. How long have you had yours? Have you looked at your plugs since you installed it? Also, which one do you have?

Message: Josh Lee, To answer your question, yes I still have the MSD6T installed on my truck. I bought the Dodge adaptor hookup for it, and have disconnected the MSD and am running on the OE ignition. It seems to run a bit better on the OE but it is very close. It also seems to idle better when sitting at a stop light.

Message: My Jacobs system rocks totally! I'm passing V8 Rams like they aren't even moving! haha
And there is a steep hill beside my house, my 3.9 dak used to struggle to go 60 up that hill, now It never drops below 65.
i've also noticed a slight improvement in MPG, but a big improvement in power!
It's hard to say exactly how much the Jacobs system helped since i have so many other mods, but there was a difference. The biggest thing is make sure the spark plugs are gapped to about .055 I suggest changing the plugs when you add a new system. Regapping the old plugs are somewhat pointless, IMO Plugs generally last longer with an aftermarket ignition system because of the increased burning of the fuel, reducing engine deposits and reducing pollution from unburned or partially burned gas. I've been researching!

Message: Hey, antone want to save some money. I have a MSD 6A for sale. Why, you might ask? Does not work well with my Kenne Bell S/C. Causes too much engine noise, and sets of the knock sensor. MSD is almost new, only had it in my trk for 3 wks. Make me an offer. Hi bid can have it.

Message: I've noticed around here over time that people talk about 1.5 mpg better with the 6A and the such; I put on the SuperConductor wires and got that; added a coil, new cap, rotor, Autolites, and no difference. Decided not to bother with the 6A. I think it might be smart to just replace the plug wires and save for something else on fuel injected Daks. Meanwhile, Donald says he's noticed a good improvement and a friend of mine with and older carbeurated Jeep noticed a huge difference particularly at higher engine speeds, so for carbs sounds like da thing to do! My $.02 only.

Message: I installed the MSD 6A today and now my heater wont change temps with the engine running. It works fine with the key in the on position but as soon as i start the engine it is stuck in whatever setting it is in. PLEASE HELP!!!!
