The KB is on a 98 Dodge Dakota w/ a 5.2 engine.

Believe my horse power gain was somewhere around 75+. That is seat of pants as I did not have it dynoed before or after.

Any more than that on a stock motor and you will start to have head gasket/bottom end problems.

Boost is around 8 lbs.

Only other mods.are Gibson cat back single exhaust, Hypertech PCM module, 160 degree thermostat.

KB has their "Big Gulp" option which was mainly a larger throttle body, 4 inch intake, smaller pully and reprogrammed optimizer computer.

Only problem has been a momentary lean burn condition right before the auxuillary injectors came on. The Hypertech and 160 thermostat cleared it up. I understand from other KB owners that the lean out condition is common.

run a map/boost bypass this will allow a proper signal to the map sensor so you don't run lean, under boost the map doesn't read right and can cause you to run lean. Oh yeah FYI a 3.9l v6 will take 12lbs of boost on the stock heads and gaskets without blowing them, v8 will only take 8lbs on stock head gaskets, thought you'd like to know that.

how can a v6 take more boost than a v8? they are the same engine and gaskets, just the v6 has two cylenders cut off.

v6 can take more boost because the bolt pattern is tighter therefore there is less room for leakage because there is more tension and pressure on the gasket because the bolts aren't so far apart from each other. Sorry if i bursted your bubble but the unfortunate reality is the v6 can take more boost then the v8 same with alot of 4 bangers the smaller motors seem to take more boost alot easier then bigger engines. Don't believe me go ask bernd how much a v8 can take and how much a v6 can take, just because something has less cylinders doesn't mean it's any less durable it's just as strong and most of the time the parts are the same as the bigger engine so why does 2 less cylinders matter it's just as strong internally as any other motor. I used to have a neon that ran 12's in the quarter on a 40 hp shot of nitrous and a hahn racecraft 10 psi turbo kit, the motor was internally stock and i never had any problems with the motor, as a matter of fact the guy who has it now owns the dealership i bought my truck from and at 90,000 miles when i took the oil pan off to replace the gasket there was no sign of wear and the bearings all looked new. Secondly the rods in that 4 banger were bigger then a stock chevy 350's rods so what does that say, just cause it's smaller doesn't mean it's weak, i mean what do you think they put in these motors????? toothpicks for connecting rods i don't think so, do some research and read some books you'll see power is acheived through tuning and careful parts selection and this applies for every motor no matter what size or shape. Classic example of power versus size it's called the 13b rotary motor at 1.3l it can produce well over 1000hp and be reliable if tuned and setup correctly and it doesn't require as much money as you think to run it at 400 to 500 hp with so simpler mods. Hope i shed some light on the subject.

p.s. from an engineering stand point things are designed to withstand X amount of units over there actual rating

i wasnt dissing the v6. i was just JUST ASKING A QUESTION!! as for asking bernd, I DID. he said anything over 10 lbs of boost i would need to change the head gaskets.

why are you compaining a neon engine to a chevy v8? we all know chevys are crap!! im well aware of neons running 13's and better with just a turbo bolt on. but whats the point of compairing the two? that would be like compairing the hemi that is in darrell alderman's pro stock to a street bike. whats the point?

the point was it does matter on the size of the engine as to whether or not it can take a specific mod or not it all has to do with how internally sound the engine is, and as for comparing the neons rods to a chevy's rods it was simply a comparison you need to read through the post much more carefully i was comparing the actual size of the rods and how it relates to the fact that engine size does not matter when it comes down to certain mods but it comes down to structural rigidity. An engine is only as good as it is built, you put weak parts in it then it's weak if you build it right then it's fine. Lastly if you can get 10 psi on the stock head gaskets in a v6 then that's still 2 psi more then the v8 and 2 psi can mean a world of difference.

jay

BTW i was not infering that you were bashing on the v6 but just answering your somewhat asked ?

Jay,

Have tried the map bypass that Bernd has on Speedtweaks.net. It helped some, but did not completely clear up problem. The lean out seemed to be caused by the lack of a fuel management component in the KB system. Think that is why the Hypertech with its more aggressive fuel curve solved the problem.

the map/ boost bypass works well on the v6 not sure on the v8 though but you may want to try some upgraded injectors just in case cause the hypertech just seems like a band- aid to me it would be a shame if it went south due to running to lean and also the other thing is too when it goes lean it gets hot so the 160 t-stat could also be the band-aid for that too. Are you running an A/F gauge if so where are you reading.
