Well we got in a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee the other day with new motor, I have yet to drive it though. Sales manager say's it flies, and you can chirp its tires in second. (this is a awd jeep) It sounds good not as laud as my Dakota(3inch exhaust and two chamber flow master) Let you know more when I test drive it.

I'd take that "chirping the tires into 2nd" thing with a grain of salt. Just about any automatic car can do that with a racing shift kit that makes the automatic shift really hard. Now do you think Chrysler on their new high end $35,000 Jeep Overland wants neck snapping shifts for the target country club soccer moms? I can just see the road test reviews pounding the Jeep for harsh shifting. Sure I love a harder factory setting on the automatics, throw in a higher stall converter while your at it but the average buyer is looking for smoothness in every part. Remember when they redesigned the GC and the new 4.7 and automatic was so quite people could now hear the rear end. Eveybody thought they had a bad rear axle when it was the same one they'd been using you could just hear it now.

From what I read the 4.7 HO engine is rated at 270 horsepower and 330 foot pounds of torque. 0-60 times in the GC is about the same as the 5.9 engine in the GC or less than 7 seconds.

Rudy, I must admit, I read just about every article possible about the 4.7L & haven't heard anything about a ho 4.7L for 2002. If it is truly available, maybe you could find out the details. Its performance numbers, what vehicles it will be available in etc. If you drove a car with one in it, there should be a brochure available. I may be trading in my 2000 QC 4x4 Auto 3.55's 4.7L V8 for a 2002 4x2 5 speed manual & would want the ho vesion of the 4.7L, please do tell!

I think you will find the HO 0-60 to be much quicker than the 5.9. More horse power, higher rev's from an engine that ways way less leaves little doubt it will crush the 5.9. Word is it will tod the 1/4 mile in 14.7!! Very fast for an SUV that big and heavy.

I dont think so jeffster. 4.7 makes torque up high well the 5.9 makes it low so 0-60 with 5.9 with still more torque will in my opinion keep up with it.

For those interested I just happen to have a 02 Grand Cherokee Sales Brochure right here on my coffee table. Jeep is has rated the engine as fallows;
horsepower 265 @ 5,200 Torque 325 @ 3,600
of course theirs a little asterick by these numbers stating when using premium unleaded fuel. Our Jeep Tech. was telling me on Friday this is a different motor then a stock 4.7SOHC. He is going to supply me with the difference, when he gets back his last master tech (a monthly mopar training program) from the service manager. In it, it lists what was done differently to the motor. I asked him if I could put the pcm from it into my Dakota, thats when I found out it was more then a software upgrade.
I haven't heard of any other vehicle that it will be available in, not even th 02 Ram 1500 I hope to drive it this afternoon. I ll let everyone know what I think

Ditto what Blizzard said. Some friendly ribbing is cool but it seems to get really serious sometimes. Has anyone noticed that the two engines (4.7 and 5.9) are in the same truck?? As for the 4.7 not having any low end torque, I dont know what 4.7's some folks have been driving but my 2000 4.7 has a ton of torque and it is not high in the rpms. The 5.9 has even more. My 4.7 is turning 33x12.50's with 3.55 gears, (not the most optimal combination) with no problem at all.
It hauls. No trouble crawling around off road, pulling out stuck S-10's etc. I can only imagine what a 5.9 would be like. With that said I remove myself from the stand and give the floor back.

A 265 hp 4.7! Wouldnt that be fun! I cant help but think that the logical place for it to appear next would be the RT!It would break my heart if they dont offer it in 4x4 daks!What I cant figure out is how did this motor get onto a carlot without any of us dakfreaks knowing it even existed or the exact horsepower.It makes me wonder what other stuff is going on we dont know about?

Here is what I found on Car-Truck.com--

Several readers also wrote in wondering about the next Ram's engine line-up, specifically about the hole between the 245 horsepower 4.7 liter V8 and the 350 horsepower 5.7 HEMI V8. Their concern is that there's not going to be an intermediate engine which will give the competition an advantage.

No need to worry, as previously reported, Chrysler already has an answer to that problem. For model year 2002 they will introduce a high-output version of the 4.7 liter V8. The 4.7 HO will put out more than 270 horsepower.

One of my Ace Buzz Patrollers reports that the Mack I engine plant began building production versions of the new engine on Monday. For 2002 the engine will only be available in the Grand Cherokee. Availability will be limited for the hot new engine. Sources tell me it's an impressive performer in the JGC, pulling 0-60 in around seven seconds and covering the quarter mile in the fourteens.

The HO 4.7 will begin showing up in the Dodge Ram in model year 2003. It probably wont make its debut in the Durango/Dakota until the new models debut in 2004/2005.

--I rember reading something about the changes that they did to the engine and the only one that sticks out was if I recall correctly was changing the type of CAM they use, was made of a different metal and was lighter. I beleive there were only a few modifications made to the engine, but for the life of me can't remember where I saw it. If I remember I'll post back.

This HO version is only showing up in the Jeep Grand Cherokee 'Overland' and Limited for this year and the Ram next year. It was supposed to be 270 HP, now it looks like 265 HP. The tester jeep was supposedly running a 14.7, but I wouldn't hold my breath for the full production version to do that unless they make the HO version available in something other then the most loaded out Grand Cherokees. It is a lot more then just new cams. It alos has: a forged crank, special crank damper, special bearings, dome shaped pistons for a 9.7 to 1 compression ratio, floating wrist pins, special cylinder heads with different shaped combustion chambers, improved air intake system, special exhaust valves, special valve springs, platinum tipped spark plugs, two knock sensors, and special PCM calibration. It requires 91 oct. gas. The 'old' 5.9 GC could run the 1/4 mile in 15.2 @ 88.7 MPH and 0-60 in 6.8 sec all stock and they are pretty easy to make run 14.5-14.8 with just a few mods like the PCM, throttle body, and maybe a little exhaust work. I can't recall where, but I did read the same thing that Blckdak stated. The one thing that stuck out in my mind was no HO 4.7 for the Dakota until they remodel the truck in 03'or 04' Just a note...GM has that new straight six in the Trail Blazer and Envoy that puts out 270 hp. My buddy is a Service Tech for a Chevy dealer and he says that engine rips.

We received a GMC Envoy two weeks ago, with the new inline 6, the vehicle itself was impressive. The drive had alot of controls at their disposale right on the streeing wheel. Over all the Suv looked gooofy on 17's big and cluncky, and that motor I guess if you want to do anything on it it has to be pulled, and Remember the front axle runs right thru the oil pan, so for get about lifting it for right now.

If they offer this engine in 04 and also come out with a new turbo diesel that year, this will be the toughest truck decision I've had to make yet. I might have to buy 2 new trucks that year. I can imagine "her" new 4.7HO RC 3.92LSD 5-speed and my new Flame Red QC 4x4 Turbo Diesel 3.92LSD 5-speed. It may indeed be Christmas in July 03.

Don't count on the 5-speed for the HO 4.7 unless they change the design or use the NV4500. If you think the 1-2 shift is tough on the strip wait till you try it with a 5.61 ratio first gear like in the NV4500. Even the HD NV3500 is only rated for 340 Ft/Lbs input which seems to close the the HO 4.7's torque rating.

www.car-truck.com says the Hemi won't show up in the ram until 2003. The Dakota gets it's redesing for 2004 but may not have any speciality trucks (like a 5.7 Hemi R/T) that first year (if they don't push the redesign back to 2005 in the first place.) The new Durango and the new 300N also come out in 2004 and they will have the Hemi as an option, this may use up 5.7 Hemi production going to the Ram and the 300N (and maybe an Intrepid R/T, and some sort of Charger concept). The Dakota may be pretty low on the list to get the 5.7 Hemi. That said if it happens I want one even if it's as ulgy as the concept drawings.

The "rumor" mill tells me they will discontinue the RT Dakota, and Market a HO 5.7L HEMI powered RT Ram in 2003/2004. This is to compete with the Terd Lightning class. The V-8 Dakota will still be available, and maybe a HO model but from what I hear the RT might be gone??? CAUTION this is only rumors!!! but it does make sense.
Hey, a HO 4.7L 5spd Dakota sounds good to me, and an RT HEMI Ram sounds even better, even if it did have an Auto trans. Depending on what they do with the Dakota, I'm considering trading up for a HEMI Ram next fall :) , yes, even an auto trans. ;)

My General Manager had me the keys to a shiny
Patriot Blue 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee This morning. He want some accessories installed,(its his Demo rig) I asked if I could take it for a spin, he said sure.
Man what a thrill, took it around the block where no one could see and thrrew the hammer down. Much faster then my 00 Club Cab, the 5 speed auto really works great, whish they could reprogram mine. I did time it but 0 to 60 was will with in 8 sec. The engine had a lot of get up and go no hesitation waiting for it to build power just press down on the pedal and your there. The exhaust could be throatier, with more base. When I got back I looked at the engine in my parts catalog, the block and heads are different but thats as far as I got, we got really busy after lunch.

As far as those interested in the Hemi engine, rumor mill has it that they were having a few problems with it, that is why you dont see it in this years new Ram and you see the old 360. When will it be released I dont know I hope next year when the redesign the 2500 and 3500, those who are desiel fans should note that their might be two desiels offered the Cummins and a Benz diesel, this is just a rumor though

The ram is getting the 5.7 hemi no matter what, it doesn't need a special package. The 5.7 in the Dakota would be a true Lightning beater and more in the spirt of a muscle 'car' (the baddest engine in the lightest package). The 4.7 HO would end up slower then the current R/T as the next Dakota is getting even bigger and heavier. Maybe I should just wait till the crate 5.7 comes out and put that in my 2000 Dakota, although for the money I bet you could build a 400 CI stroker that would spank the 5.7 Hemi.

The next Dakota is getting bigger and heavier Hersbird. It must be getting a lot bigger and heavier if the HO won't make the R/T faster than it is now. The current 4.7 will hold hands with the R/T as is.

Where can I get details on the Gen IV Dak's?
