Subject: Need new tires. Please help?

Message:
I am in need of some new tires and need some suggestions. I have the factory 15x7 rims and want a tire that will handle the rain and snow well. I guess this is a 2 part question:

1. What is the best tire for this purpose?
2. What is the biggest tire that I can put on my truck without lifting it or having the tires rub?

Thanks,
Jason

i have a 99 club cab that originally had 235's on them and when i went to the tire dealer they told me that the biggest i could put on without rubbing would be 31 * 10.5, as to the '00 i dont know if it would be any different. but if youre looking for good tires for the rain and snow i have Goodyear MT/R's. they went through very wet sticky mud with no problem at all. for snow they went through about 25" of it last winter around a friends farm. hope this helps a little

You may want to verify the wheel width. Based on your pic, you have the same wheels as me... and a previous post of mine (same general question/issue) asked the width of wheel I have. According to various people, they are 15x8.

Don't know if that matters to you... but you may want to know that before buying tires. Your options open up with a wider wheel.

KC, If you have the 15x7 rims then you can fit 32x11.50's with no problem. Thats what I have. As for brand, I am very biased towards BFG AT's. With that said, my wife is getting Pro Comp AT's put on her 99 4x4 Durango tomorrow. I am installing 33x12.50 Pro Comp X-Terrains this weekend with a body lift. Keeping my BFG's on the factory rims for long trips etc. Goodyear MT/R's are good as well but a little pricey. GY AT/S tires are ok but for the money the BFG AT's are better in my opinion.
For what its worth, I have read that the Pro Comp AT's are very very good in rain and snow (as well as other terrains).

Thank you for the help. Here is what I have found so far.

I have been looking at tirerack.com and they don't mention much about BFG's. I was looking at the Michelin LTX A/T. How much difference is there between the Michelin A/T's and BFG A/T's? I know that Michelin makes the BFG's so are they basically the same tire just different name?

Thanks for all your help.

When you guys refer to BFG A/T are you meaning the BFG All Terrain T/A? Getting a little confused with A/T and T/A.

I replaced mine with uniroyal AWTs in the stock size. Love them there a little noiser them the crappy goodyear invictas that came with truck. I live in Toronto so I drive through my share of snow with no problems. They handle very well on dry pavement and on loose gravel aswell. Hope that help.

I have a friend that wants to get Goodyear MT/R for his truck. He knows that it will be better in mud and dirt then his bfgs A/T T/A and he doesnt care about the noise he just wants to know how they handle deep snow and just 1 or 2 inch on pavement. I think that the MT/Rs would be better because of the lug sizes and spaces on both conditions. Please help.

the noise that the mt/r's make isnt all that much louder than the bfg's, i have owned them both. what goodyear did was cut certain notches into the side of the lugs on the outside of the tire that help reduce vibration. because of the lug size and design i believe that they handle better than the bfgs do in the snow. if you read my earlier message i have taken it through a good amount of snow through the yard of a friend. although the truck had a lot to do with it i don't think i would have made it through with a simple all-terrain tire. although they are a little pricier than others i think they were the price that i paid and i like the way the make my look in addition to the performance.

Just got finished re-reading an old issue of one of my 4x4 magazines where they did a tire shootout in the snow, and suprizingly enough the Pro Comp AT's beat most of the mud tires. They have a severe weather rating. Dont think I'll get to try out the snow side of that here in FL but I will be testing the rain part.
Robert, yes the BFG AT/s are the All Terrains. BFG AT (all terrain) T/A (traction advantage). BFG is owned by Michelin but the tires are still made seperately, World of difference in the 2.
