I've read several threads over the past few days and now have a few questions. Subject vehicle is a 3.9, auto, std cab, short bed sport of '01 vintage I've had a whole 9 days now. I need to know what the torque capacity of this trans is and how far I can go power wise for a reasonable amount of money. I will be using it for towing (it has 5K capability) and my main money pit won't be this as its my daily driver. My towed vehicle is that already. I would prefer to stay in the realm of bolt-ons but I do consider rockers and TB's as such. Thanks and great job out there.

PS: I'm not lifting this truck but may lower it slightly in the near future. 2"-4"

Thanks

I've shoved 381 Ft.Lbs of torque (measured at the rear wheels) through my transmission (5-speed though) but the automatic can handle just about the same.

What I would recommend is this:

(1) Cold Air Intake System (QuickD or K&N Gen-II)
(2) Modified Throttle Body: Flometrics 48mm Billet
(3) JBA Headers (if available for the '01 models)
(4) A good cat-back system (or at least a Dynomax or Flowmaster replacement muffler)
(5) 180 Degree T'Stat
(6) Autolite #3923 Spark Plugs gapped @ .040" to .045"

That's enough to really wake up the V6. Other mods can be found here:
