Subject: who tried 2001 4.7 TB IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone tried the new TB for the 4.7. I
wanted to know which one to buy. I have
upgraded PCM Dual Exaust and intake. I think
I will have to change the intake. Lookin for
some feedback. Thanks

The preliminary Dyno sheets are now up on the website. Keep in mind that these were compared to a modified 68mm TB from Brand-XXX.
Also, the dyno results are conservative but as compared to stock, or a modified...they still out perform.
70mm is more than adequate for bolt-ons and the 72mm is mainly for Supercharged and/or High RPM (custom PCM's).

Message: eveyone is saying the only need for the 72mm is if you are going to take it higher than 5500RPMS. If you aren't going over that there is no need for it. If you are asking if it would hurt MPG or power I have the same ?. I just went with the 70MM to be safe. Should get it tomorrow. I will let you know on the performance.

Message: 70mm for normally aspirated and without any custom PCM modifications to allow 5500+ RPM "Racing".
72mm for the diehard, WOT, racers who have either Nitrous, S/C, or custom PCM programming (N/A also included if 5500+RPM is required).

I can see how putting a 70mm tb on a '99-'00 with a 65mm tb would improve the airflow. But the '01 has a 68mm tb how much more torque and Hp would you realisticly stand to gain? The old physics thing where resistance is increased by the radius to the fourth power from 65mm to 70mm=34% decrease in resistance accross the tb but from 68mm to 70mm=12% decrease in resistance. Or did I read some where that the shape of the 2001 inlet is different? I was looking through your old posts and you said the dyno numbers would be out soon.
Jeez! I can't beleive you ba$tards actually got me thinking about bolting stuff on? Next thing you know I'll be trying to buy MACE's wing off him. HaHa!
Looking at the list of mod's you made you got the most bang for your buck from replacing the tb and using slicks in the 1/4. Right? Share your wisdom lord of the 4.7

Message: Dr. Q, your thinking about the stock 68mm vs. any size (69,70,72mm) F&B TB sounds reasonable, but you'd have to see the F&B to realize why 1mm or 2mm really makes a difference. Really the up size in diameter is not where the major flow increases are found. Its the entry radius and the "high polish finish", but more importantly the F&B TB's have a front to back depth that is almost twice as deep. This is very important when trying to create a large, smooth entry radius. Same effect a velocity stack has.
You'd be surprise to find out that the stock 68mm TB does'nt flow much more air than the stock 65mm TB. I sent a stock 65mm TB AND a stock 68mm TB to Hughes Engine and they bench flowed both TBs. We found out then there was very little difference in flow (32 cfm). it was not worth the $160 I spent on the 68mm for the increase you get.
Hughes Engines modified both TB's for me.
65mm TB (Stock) 400 cfm / 632cfm
65mm TB (Stage I) 450 cfm / 711cfm (13% increase)
68mm TB (Stock) 420 cfm / 664cfm (5% increase over stock 65mm)
68mm TB (Stage I) 481 cfm / 760cfm (17% over stock 65mm AND 13% over Stock
68mm)
I think what most people forget is, more flow is NOT always better, at some point you jeopordize Velocity, and that is very important. You could have 1000 cfs TB, just a big gaping hole, but with no velocity you'll have nothing!!

For all out racing, Slicks are a very good bang for the buck, especially with a 5spd trans.

Message: Ya know, I just put in a CD changer and I was just looking at the bazooka 6" tube, it would fit nicely behind the seat....next tonneau cover....mabe a tb....g tech to see what this thing does.....but no wing! no way! no how! hmmm some neon...hydrolics...a stink load of stickers..a chihuahua in the back with his head bobbin' to and fro! HAHAHA!

Agree, no little doggy bouncing in my truck, however, a RAMS head sticker on the rear window is cool, seen quite a few and read posts here of folks who have done that
Getting real now...you're doing mods to your truck, wasn't so bad breaking the cherry on being stock, now was it?
No bolt on exhaust change? (though some welds are really needed), how about some other basic stuff like a z-tube to go with the new TB, a 180 t-stat, 3923s, IAT adjustor, etc?
Ya got one foot into the dark side...

The first thing I'll do is try the 70mm tb I'll wait untill some more numbers are published.(and my house is sold-you interested? It just seem where the most gain is to be made. I kow your a z-tube junkie but, personally I feel the bottleneck that can be improved best is the tb.
The IAT is ingenius fooling the computr into adjusting the timeing. You have the chip and IAT/ Have you tried the IAT without the chip?
I got some poblems with the '01 exhaust 3 cats! I don't know if a cat-back is worth it. Matt's only gotten marginal results with it.
I'll probly put a wider track tire-at the rate I'm going it'll be soon rather than later.

Message: Civil, ah bummer, where'd the fun go? (You and I know we were just toying around: the force is strong with this one...)
I don't have the IAT adjuster in yet, waiting to get the TB, though doing both at the same time makes it hard to tell which gave the best performance gain or worked best.
There was a post earlier that said the IAT and CHIP don't work well together, thought there might have been some supporting posts on that as well.
Will try the new TB with: 1)both IAT/CHIP, 2)just the chip, 3)just the IAT...keeping a static test environment using the TB, I'll see what difference (if any) there is in the 3 scenarios
Got the same deal with the cats in my 4.7, again, I had a Flowmaster SUV 50 series cat-back done, single in, dual 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent pipe out, installed the CHIP, dropped in a K&N filter, removed the stock airbox snorkle, and reset the PCM, at the same time...everthing I learned not to do as a engineer when looking at upgrades and what works best as a single entity...kinda looking at it from the package upgrade process.
Needless to say, the flowmaster/chip/K&N drop in/no snorkle was the first 'upgrade' and the package did give me a 'feel' (and sound) in peformance gains.
After it is all said and done, the upgrades should work well together.
