Subject: catalytic converter IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 vh8 5.2 automatic. I want to build a custom exhaust and bybass a cat, however there is a 02 sensor after the catalytic converter. How can I trick the computer into thinking the cat is still in place. Any help will be appreciated.

Message: o.k. Im guessing here. On my old LS1 T/A you buy these things known as "sims" (simulates a cat being there) but I dont know if anything similar is available for Daks. You could go to www.ls1.com check some of there sponsors, maybe give 'em a call, maybe they'll know. Or you could order one, if it works, keep it, if not send it back. I think the same thing can be accomplished by using a resistor from Radio Shack, but Ive never really looked into it. Hope this helps, if not you could register at ls1.com and ask those guys, if there's anyway around OBDII they'll know!

Message: Just a little fact about the aft O2 sensor, all it does is look for a difference between the fwd and the aft 02 sensor. You could leave it plugged in, (caution you will need to wrap it in aluminum foil because its also heated.) And just tie it up somewhere out of the way. That sensor is there for the computer to know if the cat is bad. For example same voltage on the fwd sensor as the aft, bad converter. It sees a difference all is good. Good luck Chris

Message: i cleaned out my converter about 7 months ago and i guess if the sensors were sensing some diffrence in the exhaust then the check engine light would come on right, well mine didnt.laters

Message: with a little help from a obd guru We built and installed a little black box on my '97 dakota 5.2, removed cat but left o2 sensor intact because of heating element,and we bought all the parts at raido shack for $20. It's a lot of fun letting the HS employes there think you'r building a bomb or something

The part name at speedtweaks.net used to be
"Kat Box". Since then they have changed it to an
"02 SIMM". There is no need to get offensive here. They have been talked about extensivly on this board. Just do a search for one of the names or for " removed cat" or something similar.

Message: You can get an O2 simulator from Casper Electronics if you need one. They have a website and they're cheaper than other places. They mostly deal in electronics for the Buick GN's but they make one for Dodge also.

Message: Gutting the cat doesn't do a damn thing as far as power goes (unless you have an undersized one or one not equiped for that specific vehicle). The only reason the cat is there is so it will burn up any gas coming from the engine that didn't get burned and to clean up any other combustion by products. So basically your polluting the air for nothing. Im not an enviromentalist or anything, but the more crap we put in our air, the more crap the automakers are going to stick parts on our vehicles that could rob power to get our vehicles burning more cleanly.

Message: I spoke to a shop that just does this. "Removing the cat has to be done before you bring it in. But they said that as long as the sensor is still on the pipe the engine light does not come on. They have put straight pipe on many dodge dakotas

Message: The catalytics on all the late model magnum engines are high flow models. My exhaust guy (who sells racing cats) talked me out of one a couple of months ago. He ran a flow test on a factory 2000 5.9L Durango and told me there's no restriction at all. Why polute more if you don't have too?

Message: I agree with Blckdak. For the most part, modern converters are soo well designed they are generally not much of a bottleneck. I don't bother with gutting cats it anymore, but this is how I have done it in the past…
First, cut the converter off your truck. A muffler shop may tell you that they cannot cut the converter off because it is against federal law (if any of that still applies), so just do it yourself with a pipe cutter, or if you have the room, a hacksaw. Stand the converter up on its end so you can see down inside. You should be able to see the ceramic honeycomb “catalyst” that fills the casing.
With a hammer and a long punch (or a long, thin section of pipe), slowly knock a passageway through the honeycomb, turning the converter upside-down occasionally to clear out any loose debris. Do NOT remove the entire honeycomb.
The finished hole should be a hexagonal-shaped tunnel, about three inches across, passing end-to-end straight through the converter casing. (By leaving a sleeve of the ceramic honeycomb to serve as the walls of the tunnel, the converter will still be able to light off any unburned hydrocarbons, though a little less effectively. Your exhaust will still have that “sweet” smell associated with pollution-controlled vehicles, and should still pass any smog tests (if any of that still applies). Also, you won’t get that annoying “hollow” sound from your exhaust). Have a muffler shop re-attach the converter into the exhaust system. This way your exhaust system will appear stock to anyone looking it over. You MAY notice a SLIGHT increase in performance, but I doubt it.

Message: I took the cat off my 96 Dak and put single 3" pipe with a Flowmaster. The engine MIL lamp came on so I tried to get an oxygen sensor simulator to trick out the PCM. Speedtweaks offers what seems like the better, cheaper product. But even after repeated emails, they didn't ship the their O2 SIMM. I finally cancelled the order and got the more expensive, bulkier Katbox from KRC Performance and have been satisfied with their customer service and the product. The engine light went off and hasn't come back. The Katbox costs an even $100 after their $11 handling charge.

Message: Go to Jasperselectronics.com. They sell an o2 sensor simulator for 60 bucks. You only need one, not the dual kit. My Dakota has a 318 with 3 inch single exhaust all the way up to the y-pipe and a 40 series flowmaster. I used this jaspers o2 simulator and no light has come on. It sounds like a mustang cobra!! According to speedtweeks.net, 3 inch sigle exhaust works better than dual exaust.

I had the code read on a friends scan tool and it idicated that catalyst efficency bank 1 and 2 were malfuctioning. Has any one had that problem and could tell me the solution so I can fix it. What ever the problem is it casues the car to ping at high RPMs. I miss unleashing my LS1 power please HELP!!!!!
