Subject: true dual exhaust on a 4.7? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 02 reg cab 2wd 4.7 auto dakota. I was wanting to put a set of hedders on followed by 2 high flow converters that go into a 2 in 2 out flowmaster muffler. I have 2 questions. First, will it work to wire up the o2 sensors putting one in front of each converter and one behind one of them and it will read right? Second, with the hedders, high flow converters and the high flow muffler will the engine run right or will there not be enough back pressure? Thanks for your input.

Message: Engines don't require back pressure to run; that is a common misconception. What is needed is to size the pipes correctly to keep scavaging exhaust speed up at the exhaust valves to maintain good low end torque. You haven't mentioned what size pipes you are planning. If the emissions package for your truck has the two precats with sensors, your plan for the converters should work.

Message: What ^he^ said.
Also, here's a couple info links about exhaust systems.
Good reading.

Message: I believe it was 2 1/2 inch pipe that we talked about. Is that too big or will that work? Thanks for the info guys!

Message: I'm using 2 1/2 on mine single exhaust. Kind of like a cat back system, but had a muffler shop step the pipe up to 2 1/2 (was 2 1/4) I am using a Thrush turbo 2 1/2 in/out. It was cheap and I like the way it sounds, though it is probably a little quiet for some guys.

Message: I wouldn't go any bigger than 2 1/4" for dual exhaust for a 4.7.

Message: There's actually an article in the current issue of ORA - off road adventures, 4 wheel parts magazine - about exhausts. I just received mine in the mail and have only had a chance to read the cover.

Message: A larger single exhaust will always outperform a dual exhaust. The dual just sounds "better".

Message: The 2 1/4 vs 2 1/2 pipe argument is less important than the type of bends your muffler shop does. If they do crush bends then 2 1/4 pipe ends up being a little less than 2 where it is bent. While if they use mandrel bends it retains its original diameter.
