Subject: 4.7 help... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 04 Dakota 4.7 I bought new. I just want to keep it as stock as possible. I love it's OEM look. I would like to get a bit more power from the engine without spending a huge amount. Is the K&N induction any good with maybe some exhaust mods or whatever. I would rather hear from owners, as opposed to the parts guy at my Dodge dealer.
Thanks...Hommie

Message: The K&N is nice, I put it on my 2005 dakota and got a little better performance and 3mpg more, but I put an airaid TB spacer on at the same time so I'm not sure what was better. I also straight piped it from the exhaust manifold back but in Wyoming there are no emissions tests so I can get away from that. It sounds awesome and was a hue boost in performance and mpg.

Message: I made my own intake for a lot less than K&N want and the TB spacers are junk that do nothing for performance. Port and polish your throttle body and you'll see great gains.

Message: I drive an 03 4.7l and did the K&N thing, but not for any gain. I just wanted a permanant air filter (washable). Our Daks already have a pretty good cold air intake system from the factory. Look at where the stock system draws air. It's not the hot air from around the engine. Exhaust mods have to be pretty extensive to matter and are mostly illegal. I did the cat bak flow master 60 for the sound (I get more compliments on my truck's sound than on my Harley with Vance and Hines pipes). The one thing I did that made a HUGE difference was going to aftermarket cams. The swap is actually easier than exhaust mods because the cams are under the valve covers. I went from 14.7 sec 1/4 miles to 14.1. Also, the motor used to pull all the way to 5000 RPM, but just barely. Now it doesn't really hit the power band until about 2500 RPM but screams all the way to 5000 RPM and, if it weren't for the rev limiter, would pull all the way to 7000 per the cam specs. If you want to retain that off-the-line umfff for towing, leave the cam as is. If you want to be faster, do the cam swap. The best few hundred dollars I ever spent on my truck.

Message: Yeah, it's well documented the K&N intake only increases hp at the highest rpms, nothing in the rest of the powerband. And home brew intakes haven't been documented for any increase. While porting the TB can be worth an increase, that could cost some towing torque. Not the cams though, as long as you don't go any hotter than the factory HO cams - they show an increase in torque. It's been claimed the cam swap is worth most of the torque increase of the old HO package. The 4.7 will respond well to more ignition advance as well - the custom flash I got felt like about as much gain as the cam swap. Seems like a lot of the guys here are using Superchip for the extra advance for your year, flash I got is for '00,'01 only.
