Subject: Oils, now many say Fully Synthetic... IP: Logged
Message: Where's the Amsoil guy when you need him?
I was at Wally World, buying my faithful Mobil 1 Super Syn, 10-30, and the WM brand filters I've used for over 115,000 troulble free, no oil burning miles.
When I noticed Quaker State, and someone else, had a 'fully synthetic' labeled oil.
Is this marketing hype, or a true, fully synthetic oil?

Message: Independent testing has shown that Mobil One no longer makes a fully synthetic oil, despite the labeling. The synthetic content is as little as 3%, according to these tests. It's written up in another thread here.

Message: this link will answer all your questions
http://www.lubricantsandmore.com/why_use_royal_purple_oil.html
A DIFFERENCE THAT YOU CAN FEEL:
The most frequent comment from Royal Purple users is that they can feel the difference in their vehicle once they changed to Royal Purple. Royal Purple tipically improves horsepower. Horsepower that you can feel, up to a 3% gain in horsepower and torque. It also reduces fuel comsumption by as much as 5%, and most of all it tipically reduces emissions by up to 20%, depending on type of vehicle and how it is driven. How does Royal Purple do this?
SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY CREATES SUPERIOR PRODUCTS:
SynerlecŪ is Royal Purple's proprietary, lubridcant technology that strengthens the oil to provide unmatched performance and protection. It also creates a ionic bond that adhears to metal parts for continous protection, even after shutdown. SynerlecŪ is the cornerstone of Royal Purple's automotive products.
HIGH FILM STRENGTH IMPROVES PERFORMANCE:
Film strength is a lubricant's ability to prevent contact between metal parts. It is the thin layer of oil that adhears to the metal surfaces when to pieces of metal are put together. Royal Purple's film strength is up to 400% stronger than other oils. High film strength produces less friction, this improves combution for more power better fuel economy and redused emissions. Because high film strength produces less friction it also produces less wear.
REDUCING FRICTION IMROVES PERFORMANCE:
If we take two pieces of metal and rub them against each other, two things begin to happen, the metal gets warm and we notice some type of wear. This is a result of friction. Royal Purple protects against friction. This is the primary purpose of oil, to reduce friction. When we reduce friction, the two pieces of metal rubbing against each other move eaiser, we can significantly increase horespower and torque, and reduce fuel consumption, emissions, engine wear and heat. Royal Purple uses premium base oils with a very low coefficient of friction. Royal Purple remains on the metal surface long after ordinary lubricants would have been squeezed out by pressure and heat.
INCREASED OIL LIFE SAVES TIME, MONEY AND THE ENVIROMENT:
Lubricants often have a service life of only 3000 miles due to oxidation which reduces oil's ability to lubricate. Oil's ability to resist oxidation is mesured by the ASTM's rigorous Thin Film Oxidation Uptake Test(TFOUT). The test is so severe that it lasts only 1300 minutes. Royal Purple not only surpasses leading mineral-and synthetic-based oils in the test, it also outlast the the duration of the test. Royal Purple superior oxidation stability enable oil changes to extend up to 12000 miles(or even more depending upon the equipment and its operation),saving miney, saving time and reducing the amount of used oil that must be disposed of.

Message: Yes, it's marketing hype.
In the past, fully synthetic oils started out with a synthetic PAO base stock. Then all the other junk was added in.
The marketing types have managed to let the gov't change advertising standards. The got the gov't to agree that synthetic oils have certain performance standards. Therefore, any oil that meets those standards is called a "fully synthetic".
M1 no longer uses a PAO base stock in many of their car oils. IMO, it's not synthetic. Does that make it a bad oil? No, I think it's a fine oil. But it's just not a good value. Why pay PAO prices for a grade III oil?
Also, the bait and switch sorta ticks me off. They changed the lower grade oils to something cheaper, without lowering the price. When will they change the other grades without telling us?
In my truck I switched to Quaker State semi-synth. I believe it to be just as good, but about $1-1.50 cheaper per quart.

Message: Yeah, that's the excuse they used, Hurricane Katrina. Seems to be a handy excuse for a lot of stuff.
Nobody cared? I stopped using it because I cared. So did a lot of folks, especially those with high performance cars.
What really happened is they managed to keep it a big secret. They still won't admit it. They noticed their profit margin was up, so why change?

Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?
Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.
and i quote
"Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs),"

Message: "me" - is it us that need to do some reading; or is it you that needs to work on your reading comprehension ? That you didn't have the conviction to use your usual screen name suggests it may be the latter. I checked the site "dude" posted and found it was actually a link to many different forums and threads. Reading the first one about Mobil One that I found revealed someone who had the oil tested found that it wasn't completely PAO based. Now let me give you an example about what that might mean - everyone familiar with the product "pure maple syrup" ? Let's say a pancake syrup company wants to make a run of syrup and uses a little of that in the recipe. Now they can say their product is "made with real maple syrup". Does that mean the product is pure maple syrup ? Of course not ! Mobil One may be doing the same thing. I also noted some references that claim it's fully synthetic; so the info on that site in some ways conflicts.
The quote from "here" says it includes includes high performance-fluids, including polyalphaolefins" - so what is the rest of it then ? As a Mobil One user myself I'd have to say the jury is still out on this one; and I find myself questioning the integrity of the product.

Message: Thanks for digging up one of my old posts! Not too old actually.
I've had such good results with M1, as in my current 01, 4.7 Dak, with 130K miles, not burning or using any oil between oil changes.
I always change my vehicles myself, with M1 from Wally World, about every 7,500 miles.
I'm sure the others may be just as good, but with the results I've had for decades in vehicles with M1, I still use it. I still feel its a superior oil, whatever its made of.

Message: It appears that some of the M1 oils are a PAO base, like the 20W-50. But the oils that most street vehicles use is not any longer. If you try and pin Mobil down on that one, they won't give you a straight answer. Ask them specifically, "Is 5W-30 a puro PAO oil?"
Somebody here quoted a japanese web site where they admitted that the lighter grades were a group IV. But the heavier grades are PAO.
Since they changed some of the oils to group IV without telling anyone, how long before they change the others? As long as they have one product made from PAO, they can continue to use the same sneaky advertising. That would probably be 20W-50 motorcycle oil.
Like Todd, I've been using M1 for years in a lot of vehicles. Results have been excellent. But that was the old PAO oil. This is a differant oil. It has the same label, but it's a differant product. Is this new oil just as good? I don't know. I would tend to agree that it is probably just as good. You probably wouldn't notice any differance between the two oils.
Except in the pocket book. IMO, this is a bait and switch. They're now using a cheaper group IV base stock. Did the retail price go down? No, it did not. Like all oils, it went up. Now you're paying more for less. Why pay PAO prices for a group IV product?
IMO, M1 is still a good product. Not as good as it used to be, but still good. It's just not a good value.
