Message: what do you mean by AWD??
i believ that a 4x4 is desirable over a AWD because the front wheels can be engaged at will
whereas a AWD is 4x4 all the time and thusly less fuel economy on the dry highway
or is your dak a 2 wheel drive and you want 4x4
if this is the question, the frame for a 4x4 is alot different, parts not interchangeable, and the steering uses a totally different system
, 2wd uses rack and pinion 4wd used steering box

Message: your best bet is to find another truck w/AWD.
why not just get a "locker" for the rear end on your truck and some street slicks. then you can "street race" all you want.

AWD and 4x4 are not the same thing!!!!!!

on the other hand go buy a naw set of tires, and find some dry pavement, and put in drive (3 clicks down)

Message: jd - Gas mileage is not affected by AWD vs 4x4 (I get 19+ mpg on the hiway consistently w/ the 4.7 AUTO and AWD). You're still turning all the same parts - half axles, diffs, driveshafts. No difference in inertia being driven/spun. The 4x4 simply throws a solenoid in the t-case to connect an already spinning front shaft to the rest of the drivetrain. I prefer AWD because you don't get the infamous 'front end push' like you do in 4x4, not to mention the AWD causes much much less wear and tear on the drivetrain. AWD is great for the street/light trail. I have 81,000 on my STOCK tires and will probably get 15,000 more. I drive this truck fairly hard (as does the better half) and am quite thankful for the AWD system for handling and emergency situations. Works great. I, too, had my doubts initially, but have come to really enjoy the AWD option.

Message: mabey what you think of AWD is different than me
AWD= all wheels drive all the time
4x4= back wheels drive all the time and front when you engage them
on my 1990 dak 4x4 yes the t case engages power to the front axle, BUT there is also a shift collar in the front axle that shifts at the same time disconnecting the front drive shaft from the front axles...... get under a 4x4 when its on the ground and you will be ablt to spin the front driveshaft when in 2wd, it free wheels and you will get better milage when the front is not engaged, AWD puts power to all four wheels all the time..... less fuel milage
how does AWD put less wear on the drive train, when a 4x4 in 2 wd does not put any load on the front drive shaft, carrier, or gear set......
hmmmmmmmmmm

Message: Ok will to answer the first question you can get the AWD out of a Durango R/T if that is what you want. Another thing AWD and 4x4 are the same thing with small differences. Every car is differnet but think of the things that make AWD and 4x4 work. Transfer case well they both have them (similar) Front Diff they both have them (similar). Now how about internals, in some vehicals that have AWD there is a center differentail that senses tire slippage and puts power to the front. depending on the car you can go from 0/100 to 50/50 split or if you are an EVO you go from front wheel drive to a 50/50. But besides that difference which is only in some cars AWD and 4x4 are the same.
Like i told him above, he can get a Durango R/T system. These durangos have AWD and 4x4. If you look at the switch it says AWD, 4x4 High, 4x4 Low on it. which brings up another point. Every vehical with AWD except these durangos only have one speed. No High and Low they just have a normal one to one ratio. If you dont believe me look in one of the old Petersons 4wheeler mags.
Rick who is the cheif editor talks about the differce between AWD and 4x4 and at the end of his artical it says there is only little differences in some cars/trucks between AWD and 4x4. "Other then that it is all Marketing from the auto makers"

Message: Another thing if you want 4x4/AWD dont put all the money into fabbing up the stuff to fit your truck just get a truck with 4x4/AWD. It will cost you a lot less and will save you a big headache. Sorry dont mean to be a D!ck about it but it is the truth. I have been working in the offroad world a long time so i know what you are looking for.
Good luck

Message: jd - the newer Daks (as with my '02 - I'm not familiar with the 1990 version of the Dak) don't have a Central Axle Disconnect, therefore the front driveshaft of a 4x4 is spinning all the time, just like AWD. This results in no difference in MPG, since, regardless of AWD vs 4x4, whether in 2wd or not, the same inertia is being spun. My AWD (52% rear / 48% front) has an inactive open diff in the t-case, therefore -- less wear (no binding in t-case), no accentuated understeer, etc). Hope this helps.

Message: actually ive wondered the same thing i poseted it here like a year ago wondering if i could get an AWD system put into my truck. Come to find out dodge did come out with a dakota that was AWD the only thing was the tailgate would say AWD and when you looked under the truck it looked like a 4x4 yet when you looked in the cab for the little switch to turn to 4x4 it wasnt there. I even qustioned the dealership and they had no idea. We tested it out in the shop there and it was AWD cause if one of the back tires slipped the front tires would turn to try and gain traction like an AWD system. should of bought the sucker but it was another couple grand out of my budget.
