Subject: Finished the 4.56 gears in my front axle IP: Logged
Message: Well after having some problems getting the correct pinion bearing(s) for my diffs (they are DEALER only) I finally got my front axle swapped out to the 4.56's now and was able to finally test it in 4HI/4LO
4LO is pretty low now :)
Advice to others doing thir gear swap, order the FULL install kit with the gears. I ordered the minor install kit. It sucked A$$ driving only to find no bearings available for a 2003 Dakota 4X4
My Dakota had to be pushed back into the garage last week and sat with the front diff laying on the garage floor until tonight when I got the bearing from the dealer today (had to be ordered!)
At least it's light enough to move work on easily. I can actually set the front axle on my LAP and work on it :)
Since my tools were already scattered around the garage floor, it only took 30 to 45 minutes to re install the axle into the Dak. (All air tools).
Too late to get the bro in law to come buy and help, I had to rely on my 10 yr old to operate the large floor jack while I am UNDER the truck.
So tonight I was finally able to try out 4WD again. No hill climbing yet, but it works again and no noise I can hear. So that's GOOD news.
4.56 gears ROCK!

Message: "nothing like a 10 year old running the jack while under the truck" lmao!
thats great GD so how she go? you had your tools real organized in a nice neat pile. how long did that take you? i bet your truck in 4wd wont even notice a 90 degree hill.
now for some 4wd launches! :)

Message: Congrats, I echo what Modain said about you doing the swap yourself. And, yeah in 4Lo my 1st and even 2nd gears are "stump pullers". Been driving in the snow quite abit lately in 4Hi, no problems or weird noises. Going on a long road trip for the holidays, anxious to check mileage on the highway, cause around town for some "strange" reason my mileage sucks! Well, might have something to do with rate of accelleration LOL

Message: LOL! Well my girl DID operate the jack. But what I DIDN'T mention is that the truck was held up by a jack stand and she was using the jack to lift the front diff back into place.
I'm crazy... But not THAT crazy :)
It was really cool to do that task on my own. First time I had done a swap with NEW GEARS. I've played with used gears before but not on something needed to TOW 200+ miles here and there.
I haven't tried any hills. It will be nice next time I go on top of a steep hill, at an angle, where one wheel on each axle lifted slightly enough to spin the wheels (open diffs) and not climb anymore until I would touch the brakes going UP the hill!
The LSD in the rear should help there. But in 2WD, the truck likes to take off sideways on slight throttle, even on dry pavement at times :)
What's next???
Hmm... well I'd like to do real Dual Exhasut on the lil' 4.7 and see how she runs. Would be cool to have it bark out some large dual tips with them 4.56 gears.
But here soon I really need to give more effort into the beast that's laying in pieces in my Garage!
My latest project,, and it's a MOPAR :)
It's a 1974 Duster. Pre emmisions too. I'll be doing gears in that 8 3/4 rear pretty soon. Looking towards a 318 turbo charged. The 3,000 Lb car should move. :)

Message: When you get ready to do duals, take my advice and do true duals, if not at least get rid of the stock y-pipe and go with an after market one. True duals with a x-pipe is the way to go.

Message: LOL FLDak, if you have been reading some of my posts, you would know I'd NEVER run dual pipes without doing it duals ALL THE WAY.
I think it sounds stupid, and is pointelss, to split a singel exhaust into dual outlet.
It don't even sound anything like real duals.
My bro in law did his recently on his 2000 RAM> He brought the pipes out just before his rear tires. I don't really like the sound of it. It never really BARKS when it raps out. It just sounds lazy to me.
I think I'm going to stick with pipes out the back. I got to go buy two CATS so I can do my duals. Since I only have the single cat now after the Y-Pipe.
I also need to buy more wire for my welder before I get carried away. Keep forgetting that every time I reach for the welder :(

Message: Hey, GraphiteDak my next mod in a few months are gears. I already have LSD and 3.55 but haven’t decided 4.11 or 4.56 because eventually I’m going to 35s. Were the bearings different on the 3.55 or what? I have installed gears but it has been 20 years, I know showing my age. How about an explanation. Also where did you say you bought yours? Sorry, couldn’t find the other post.
Thanks CC

Message: accuauto.com for the parts. Mine is a 9.25 rear. Not sure if you have that one or the smaller 8.25 they were using before.
The bearings are the same on any of the gear ratios. But I had to get mine from the dealer since I didn't order them WITH my gears and LSD unit. Bad choice!
If you run 35 inch tires, 4.56 no brainer!
I've got just under 30" tires and I love the 4.56 gears!

Message: The last set of gears I set up was on an S-10 so I didn’t have to replace the carrier bearings. Wouldn’t that be the same since I would only be replacing the ring and pinion or am i missing something here. Just getting the scoop, as I don't like surprises. Mine is AWD so I'll be down during the swap.
Thanks CC
