Subject: 2.5L TB Size - Upgrade Choices

Message:
I've been looking into the possibility of putting a Jeep 4.0L TB onto my son's 2.5L Dakota. I've run across lots of posts indicating that popping a 4.0L TB onto this engine will give it a noticable (but small) HP boost.

I can't seem to find what the stock 2.5L TB size is, what the stock 4.0L TB size is, and how big I can go before affecting the performance in the wrong direction. And also, what years will these parts interchange.

I thought they had a 2.5 board on here. Since you are a member you can do a search. Also it shouldn't be too hard to modify the existing tb.

The Members 4-Cylinder board was removed - to free up the space, and it hadn't had any real activity in quite a while. Before it disappeared none of the posts had any info that I am requesting...

I can tell that the stock 4.0 tb is 56x60mm. One of the mini-van sites might have some info

Unless you have a turbo you can pretty much forget changing the throttle body. If they are still using the same style as the 94 2.5. I might be wrong because I have not seen any 2.5 in Dakota's as of late. My son races a 85 Omni GLH Turbo. You can always build a Turbo engine.

I don't understand why I should forget about changing the TB. Jeep 4 bangers do this to get a little more power. It's the same engine in the Wrangler - an AMC 4.0L straight six with the middle two cylinders removed. It's not the same 2.5L SOHC engine found in the Omnis and so forth. I don't know what year DC started using this engine.

the jeep 4.0 tb really makes no difference in power when put on a jeep 4 banger. i tried this on my buddys wrangler and it made no difference at all. the 4.0 tb is tapered from 62mm at the top to 56mm at the bottom whereas the 2.5 tb is a straight through 52mm bore. it is worth a try though. when coupled with other mods, it will make a difference. just good luck trying to find jeeps in junkyards. here in georgia, i cannot find any at all because special jeep junkyards buy them out of others and have them at their yard. i have an '85 jeep cj7 and it is damn near impossible to find them in junkyards. it originally had the carburated 2.5l four banger when i got it in highschool. i swapped in a 4.2l inline six that is built. right now, the transmission is out of it. since i put the motor in it, i have gone through two transmissions. oh well. thats what i get with all that neck snapping torque that thing has.

Thanks Dave. I was hoping to get some info from someone who knows the specs and has gone down that path.
