Friend of mine owns a '98 Dak, 75K, well maintained, with the 2.5L motor. He's had great luck in this crappy climate (western NY), except for one thing. Cold starts can be a pain.
We cleaned the injectors using a 9 volt battery, acetone, and a couple of wires. Truck starts better, and he gets better mileage, but same cold start issue. Cranks, but has a difficult time starting when cold, like it's an ignition issue. I recommnded the performance Accel coil, as well as a possible tightening of the timing chain tensioner. Cap, rotor, plugs, and wires have been replaced with quality parts.
The distributor is original, and is not adjustable for timing purposes. Computer controls ignition timing.
Any thoughts?

Just a thought. Has he tried replacing the fuel filter? Maybe the cold weather is causing any "gunk" to be gumming up in the colder weather, but freeing up when it's warm? Again, just a stupid thought (as most of my problems are something simple and stupid that are discovered AFTER I spend a bunch of money on other stuff) Just My 2 Cents

I don't know much about the dakota 2.5. When you say "cold start", I assume you are referring to when you start it after it's sat like overnight or so, not like in terms of only happens in the winter time.
What the truck has sounds a lot like "Jeep syndrome" as we called it at my Dad's shop. Crank shaft position sensors are konwn to cause this problem. It leads to an extended crank when cold. Since the 2.5 is based on the 4.0 jeep straigt 6, this could be the source of your problems.
Beyond that I really have no idea of what else your problem could be.
