Subject: 6-speed tranny IP: Logged
Message: I would like to know about the 6-speeds in the new Dakotas.
What is the designation on them?
I know for the Diesel Rams, its NV5600.
Is that the same 6-speed they're using on the new Dakotas?
Or is there a different model tranny that they use on the Dakotas?
And another question, will the new 6-speed out of a Dakota fit our Gen III trucks?
Same question for the Diesel Ram 6-speed?

Message: I don't know all the specifics, but it's a Getrag tranny.
It'll probably bolt up to the engine fine, but I have no idea if the clutch, or mounts need to change. Possibly the driveshaft will need to be shortened or lengthened. Maybe the yoke is different.
I don't think it's such a good tranny compared to the NV3500 used in the previous years. Every time I have configured a 4x2 SLT configured as close to my truck the best I can come up with is about 5300#s for the tow rating. This blows compared to my truck's 6050# rating. When changing to the 5-45RFE the rating (on the 2005) goes to over 7000#.
This makes me think it is a much weaker tranny and wouldn't be suitable for how many of us use or trucks.

Message: And the NV3500 is a 5-speed right?
Next question, on the Dodge Ram SRT10, they have a 6-speed right?
Is that also a NV5600?
And on the Dakota RT, did they have an available 6-speed at all? I dont remember...

Message: The SRT-10 tranny is a Tremec T56 with a Hurst shifter, great for performance, not for heavy duty use, they dont even give it a tow rating. Also, there are two six speeds offered for the ram, one is the NV5600, which is the higher strength one, there is a lesser capable one available for the smaller engines that is probably the same one used in the dakota.

Message: Little off topic. I've seen articles and pics of a dakota with a 6 speed viper tranny in it. It had a modded 318 with 4.56's. Was pretty sweet. Anything is possible.

Message: I had some time tonight and put together a table regarding the tow ratings, etc. of the different drivetrain configurations of Dakota QCs from 2002-2005. It appears that my initial assessment ot the Getrag 238's strength is a little off.
First off, DC doesn't offer any configuration of the GR238 tranny with 3.92 gears. That sucks...
But, when comparing an NV3500/3.55 combination to a GR238/3.55 combination the data shows that the GCWR on the 2005 truck is 500#s heavier and the max tow weight is 5350#s as opposed to the 5150# and 5050# ratings of the earlier years.
It would appear that this could be a viable modification to our trucks if someone was so inclined. Of course, there are the clutch, driveshaft, and other issues to factor in.
You can find the imperical weight data here.

Message: 01Motorsport, ... that link you posted has some parts for my 1974 Duster I am going to start on soon.
I was considering a 5 speed manual in it.
Only bad thing is the ONLY bellhousing I see on there for a SMALL BLOCK is the steel racing one. They only seem to have the aluminum ones for the big blocks. What's up with that???
I'm still thinking of just going to the junk yard and looking for a tranny out of a Dakota. I wonder how far off the shifter would be???
Cutting a hole in my floor board to adapt for the tranny would be no big deal.
Anyone have a picture of a 5 speed form a 318 Dakota?

Message: GraphiteDak,
Do you want interior shots??
I have a 4.7 and the tranny is in the same place as the 5.2 and 3.9. If you want to see pics let me know.
