Message: can't give you exact numbers but i think some of these have clocked times faster than some R/T's. don't take offense R/T guys. it depends on a few things. auto vs manual, 3.55:1 vs 3.92:1 or 4.10:1 gears, driver ability, etc.
you may get some kind of idea on times if you search this site. i am sure there are several posts on this very subject.

Message: I don't think your bone stock auto will be nearly that fast, even with the reg. cab. My 5 speed 318 truck was getting high to mid fifteens when it was stock, and you're giving up power with that auto trans.

Why are most track records set with autos if they are "giving up power?"

Message: Automatics do eat up a lot more power than manual transmissions. But automatics shift more consistantly. Drag racing is all about being consistant. Manual transmissions absolutly put more power to the rear wheels than automatic transmissions.

They aren't. Most Top Fuel Dragsters don't use transmissions anymore. They use clucth packs set for the amount of slippage they need for the conditions at the time.
The truly fast cars that do use trannys, top fuelies, funny cars, and pro stockers, usually have Lenco type trannys.
A good driver with a properly set up stick can beat an auto every time he doesn't miss a shift.
It's those missed shifts that kill your stick.
Like Joe said, consistancy is the name of the game in any race that has a break-out rule.

Message: Well I think those "top fuel" tranny's can't be compared to a AUTO or your typical Manual.
And those top fuel dragsters are VERY computerized now.
Now for the garage bred hot rod builder, the guys running below 10 seconds are almost ALL moddified factory auto's.
But comparing a more STOCK auto Dakota with a STOCK stall converter to a Dakota with a 5 speed manual, then the manual usually wins because of the closer ratios and more power at the wheels.
But a built engine and a modded auto with a high stall is what most people go with.
I was wondering if I could get Hughes to take apart my stock stall converter and get me more around 2500 stall and yet retain my lockup function.

Message: I agree with you that almost all of the sub 10 second garage bred drag racers use autos.
Most bracket racers use autos.
But not because they are quicker than a stick.
A propely set up stick will launch harder and shift just as quick as an auto.
They use autos because they are easier to drive, easier to set up, easier to get a consistant launch.
I had a "69" SS 396 that my daughter use to bracket race. It was an auto. She'd put it in drive, stage it shallow, let off the brake and floor it when the last yellow lit up and let it do the shifting. She almost always cut a perfect light and the car was as consistant as can be. It was stupid easy to drive the way it was set up.
I don't like bracket racing. I don't like break-out rules. I'm a cranky old man that wants to run heads up, run what you brung, like they used to in "the good old days".

Message: i raced in the dakota rt shootout back in april in northcarolina and all i have is a rc 2wd 318 5speed with a k&n and flowmasters with a sure grip 3.55:1 gears and i was only running mid to low fifteens with no tailgate and fuel additives so i think for that little 4.7 to push that truck as fast as you want your going to have to do some minor things such as intake and exaust posibly a cam i spun a little off the line but most of the guys i ran with had skins on the back so they dident as much some good quality street slicks such as bf goodritch ot nittos would not hurt you a bit

Message: Yeah. The "break out" rules kinda suck except that it prevents someone from doing a lazy qualifier then just ripping people up.
But again. I also think sometimes just whoever is FASTEST in the end, should win :)

Message: yeah im startin to think so, but it does have a different muffler but it has to have somethin else done to it i just cant tell, like the ol guy that had it before me might have put in the HO cams or the little options printout is wrong about my 3.55 rear, cuz a 95 5.0 3.73 mustang shouldnt have a problem with a mildly heavy truck with a smaller V8. Idk tho all u guys are comparing me to the 318, i hear they have a crazy amount of torque off the line but nothin above first gear, but my little 4.7 pulls like a bat outa hell from 2500 rpms in first up until mid third gear about 90 ish. Idk u guys decide
