I just bought a 98 w/ 318 V8 2 weeks ago. I recently noticed that the tube that comes off the air box and into the fender is missing. I was thinking of replacing the intake since the stock one is missing a part. I was going to look for the FIPK but being a student I can't see paying 250 for one. I recently thought about getting one of those round open element filters like older cars had in the 70's. I know a 14x3 will fit a genII dak but will it fit a genIII? I heard that the TB is too close to the firewall for a larger diameter filter to fit. I'm also concerned about how high the filter can be. Is a 3" filter too tall for the hood to close? I found one for 23 bucks at Jegs:

Whistle? I love the sound of an engine sucking air. This will handle up to 1000 cfm and cost just $20. Careful, you might lose 1-2hp but I'd give that up any day to get rid of that ricer like plastic monstrosity.

thats what Im running right now(open element).I had an old top and base up in the attic. I scrunched up tinfoil between the two and measured the compressed height, I ended up buying a 2 &3/4" accell oilbath foam filter (in Canada) for $20 12". I was just woking with what I had(on the cheap, 3 daughters 4, 2 1/2 and 1) Any way at the strip i ran into an identical R/T.Same color and all. Yhe only mod I had at the time was the air filter. I consistintly ran 2 tenths quicker than him all night. 15.0s with less than 1000km.

2000dakot R/T work in progress

Thank you all for the information. I just wanted to make sure I didn't buy something that would be too big.
Thanks again!

I went to Autozone, Advance, and PepBoys, and I think I'll go with the Edelbrock 10x2". Seems to be as cheap as the Mr. Gasket and "Spectre" and cheaper than Holly. I like the fact it has the hookup for the stock pcv valve. Jegs.com has it for 17.99. I forget what it was at the local stores maybe 19ish. Thanks for all the input. I took some measurements and I know for sure that the 14x3" will NOT fit.

I just thought I'd update this thread. I later bought a 14x2.25 and it fit OK. I just had to bend the radiator hose forward a bit, and it works great! Today I just replaced the filter and went with a 14x3". It does touch the hood, I saw a little chip in the paint under the hood, but that was when I initially closed the hood after putting the filter in. I'm going to get a small piece of the fuzzy side of Velcro and put it on the hood where it makes contact with the air cleaner so it won't scratch anymore. The annoying whistle from the smaller filter is gone now, all that is heard is the wooshing sound which is much nicer now. I'll have to test performance tomorrow.

Yes, those are the stock valve covers. I haven't cleaned the engine compartment for a while so everything's a bit dusty. I found a trick to make the engine look brand new. Just use some armorall on the valve covers and stock intake and other black faded parts, and it makes everything look brand new. If only there was some way to get rid of the rust on the exhaust manifolds without going to headers.
