Message: Not sure about the IAC, but the TPS has a few symptoms that I have personally run into. When driving the RPM's would rev to up about 200 then drop right back down. I replaced the TPS and all is fine. Some people will see that it will smift early or late, sometime whine out. Had that problem a little. What problems are you having, if any?

Message: My bad TPS symptoms were;
-unstable idle, from 400 up to over 1000
-sporadic converter lockup during constant hwy speed, rpm would jump 200 up and down, every few seconds
-erratic transmission shifts in city driving, sometimes quite hard
-occasional stall when coming to a stop or shifting to 'drive' or 'park'
These bugs all disappeared with a new TPS, and as a bonus; my fuel mileage improved by a point or two ...that will quickly cover the cost of the new part. A defective TPS will often NOT give an engine code, unless it exceeds its voltage range,
and by then your engine probably isn't running anyway.
A bad IAC will cause unstable idle, difficult starting, and stalling.

Message: Had many of these symptoms, especially the floating RPM's at hwy speeds.
Replaced the TPS last night (10-minutes) and it made a world of differance. Smooth idle, no fluctuations in RPM at hwy speeds. I cut open the original TPS and found worn spots that registered 0 on my meter when I tested the unit. I have 116k miles, mostly hwy on my "01" Quad-DAK, 4.7L.
I recently bought shocks thinking the floating RPM's at hwy speed was due to rear wheel hop going over bumps, etc. That wasn't the problem. (probably need them anyhow at 116K miles).
Wish I had seen this site before buying the shocks.
Thanks for the info. I'll be coming back here more often.

Message: i figured out from a different mopar site how to diagnose the tps with my meter. but heres the dumb question of the day, what is an "i a c"
i have noticed a flutter of about 150 rpm when at idle , and the tps swap didnt correct it(however i needed it anyway so no loss there....)
ps thanks for all the great advice...its hard to be taken seriously as a newbie ....thanks for extending the hobby to the common guy.

Message: IAC = idle air control - on the back of the TB, meters extra air to compensate for stuff like the extra power needed to run AC at idle.

Message: thanks....could be the problem there...i will check on that, since the rpm flutter does not occur untill the engine is at idle and then only occasionally.....maybe im just being anal about it...but hey, thats my baby.
thanks for answering the question with minimal ridicule.

Message: I'll get that flutter too sometimes in the morning first going into gear; but I haven't srewed with it since its just a quick stumble and doesn't cut out. If you try to clean it, its important not to twist the plunger. If you have a 4.7 the TB gasket is reusable. Good luck.

Message: Probably because there is no thread on an IAC relocate... you might be thinking of relocating IAT (intake air temp sensor) ? I'd be surprised if you really need to add more fuel at this point - did you decide this by reading your plugs; or are you just winging it ?

Message: yup...it was my inlet air temp ...just a typo.
this was recommended to me by a mechanic friend of mine based on my plugs....he's got the twin brother to my 3.9, and thats the only mod he's got that i dont ..and theres noticable hp difference from his to mine, especially off the hop. here's a list of mods so far:
3.9 99 dak sport
3;55;1 rear end
v8 tb, ported
airraid cold air
aftermarket wires and plus 4 bosch plugs
dynomax muffler and cat, 3 inch pipes (3 1/2 tip)
shorty headers.
mods to come...
.superchip tuner, stage 2
iat relocate
blaster coil
any suggestions...i actually want to smoke this buddy of mine once off the line, then make HIM beg for answers for a change!

Message: How did he do it then ? There are different ways to do that - a change in injectors, or a custom PCM flash. But remember, not all motors are going to be exactly the same anyways - some come from the factory with different amounts of ignition advance; there can also be assmbly variances - different internal tolerances, varying amounts of cam timing, etc. Two engines modded exactly the same can still have different hp. Best way to walk away from him ? Trade up to a v8. Good luck !

Message: well...after the iat reposition....we pretty much keep nose to nose after 3 1/4m runs...neither of us has heard anything about an injector change tho?
can you give me some details...id rather not mess with the cam or timing, i'll let the superchip tuner ive got on order handle that...
but different injectors...id try that..do tell
thanks...

Message: I got the same symptoms on my dakota 3.9 V6 Auto. and since it starts getting cold around here, I had unstable idle @ high speeds, going 1650 rpm @ 55 mpg, when going over little bumps on the freeway the engine will slightly increase about 200 rpm for one second and then it will come back to normal, it won't do it all the time, but after reading this post. yesterday went to the dealer and got a new tps from Mopar and about 15 mins I replace it. The only think a brand new tps will come with a gasket and an "O" ring. I put the gasket on the new tps but I really don't know if the "O" ring was the best option. Or maybe I cuoud install both of them for a better seal. Now the driving its better with out fluctuations on the engine @ high speeds.

Message: Have a 2002 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 Diesel started having problems that it would go in and out of over drive. It would go though the gears when i would take off first second and then third but sometimes it would start going into over drive then back to third gear. Took it to my menchanic he put the transmission computer on and said it was the Throttle position sensor that it had a bad spot on it. My guestion is can this be the cause(TPS) of the problem i am having.
